- Carolyn JEncinitas, California4 contributionsMagnificent gardens and tour.Outstanding guided tour by amazing Freddie. His knowledge of Hawaiian history and botanical foliage is shared in comments and wonderful story telling skills. His pacing makes the steep walk enjoyable, as if you are ambling through “his garden”. The friendly staff are helpful and kind. Drink the delish cool Filtered water afterwards. We had been to the gardens on south Kauai, but this magnificent jewel is the best—- so full of local Haena beauty. What a blessing to the North Shore!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 October 2023
- CathyV63Vernon, Canada212 contributionsBeautiful Spot and Very EducationalThis is a wonderful spot with stunning views. We did the guided tour which I highly recommend. We learned so much about the plant species on the island and their origins. Just a great education and beautiful to look at. Our guide was very good. Pacing of the tour was good and it is easy walking (but do wear closed toes or hiking shoes).Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 November 2023

- Michael Z8 contributionsGuided tour is awesomeHighly recommend doing the GUIDED tour of this fabulous gem. The tour guide is knowledgable and really did an astounding job at describing the plants and their role in the Kauai ecosystem. We left understanding the Kauai flora and how invasive plants are affecting the environment of this beautiful island. Highly highly recommend this garden and its guided tour.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 May 2024
- Snedra35 contributionsBeautiful Guided TourI booked the guided tour for this place which turned out to be the best idea ever! Nancy was our tour guide. She was extremely knowledgeable about the plants and histories of Kauai and Hawaii. She shared legends and talked about the different types of plants as well as how they arrived at the island if they were brought by Polynesians. In addition, she pointed out extremely rare species. Advisory: there are a lot of steps going through the gardens and up the hills, so this is not ADA friendly. With that said, the Gardens provide walking sticks to be utilized on the tour and returned afterwards. We had several elderly people in our group that utilized them, but again, a lot of stairs! I highly recommend visiting.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 11 June 2024

Driving to the end of the road on the North side of Kauai, we arrived at Limahuli Garden in the pouring rain. After all, this is a tropical botanical garden! It was one of the best experiences in our 2 weeks in Kauai. The garden was virtually empty so we really had the place to ourselves. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We were able to do a self-guided tour of this very special garden. It was an authentic Hawaiian landscape, with the tropical weather to go with it! One of the most meaningful exhibits was the one showing the "canoe plants", which showcased the plants that were brought by canoe when the early people settled in Hawaii. It is a lovely peaceful place. It takes about two hours to tour it but you can easily spend longer. And the adventure getting there driving across one lane bridges was just as much fun.
I would definitely go back once they open up the guided tours, as I would like to hear more about the native and endangered species.

A beautiful collection of native plants that not only looked nice, but also told a story about the way plant life has evolved on the island as settlers landed. The booklet provided was chock full of interesting info. The views from the top of the walk (about 1/2 way through) were incredible of both the mountains and the ocean. Peaceful and beautiful. I could have sat on the benches throughout the walk all day long taking in the scenery.
I am no botanist and my family doesn't have much interest in walking around in the sun looking at leaves, but all of enjoyed this thoroughly.

We so enjoyed the Limahuli Garden, it was an incredibly relaxing and informative garden tour. It is self-guided and the tour pamphlet answers all your questions. The tour also teaches you a lot about the history of Hawaii's people and its plants. The tour is supposed to take about 45 minutes, but we spent two hours thoroughly enjoying the beauty and peace of Limahuli. Wonderful place to visit, we would highly recommend it!

Don't miss this place, especially with the tour--the history and native roots here are as powerful as the incredible views. If you're lucky enough to have Freddie as your tour guide like we did, you will leave with a full heart and inspired spirit. What a special place, we are blessed for connecting with it.

We did a guided tour with Nancy. She was fantastic, telling us all about the plants and trees of Kauai. We learned a lot about the history of Kauai and how some plants came to be on the island. We also learned Hawaiian folklore. It was so much better than taking a self-guided tour. We highly recommend this tour if you want to learn more about Kauai.

Is it handicap accessible? My mother is in a wheelchair. Just wondering how far, if at all, can she go?
Written 13 February 2018
No, it’s along and up a canyon and can be rugged and there are many stairs.

Is it kids-friendly? We have a 3 year old daughter. Can we take the stroller there?
Thank you.

You might want to go to their sister garden in the southern part of the island. It's the NTBS Allerton Garden. It's a lovely stroll as the gardens were planted by the Allerton's as outdoor rooms. Perfect for the entire family. I wouldn't rule out Limahuli either as it is dependent on your child's willingness to walk. The upper portions of the gardens, where you have the beautiful sweeping views require following a path and stairs up the hill. The tour is self guided so you could see what works for your family.

The walk is not difficult and there are some stairs built in where the path gets a bit steep. There are benches along the way to rest and also cold water at several stops. You can go at your own pace which makes it especially nice.

Do you have to pay to do the tour? Or is that price if you want a tour guide person?
Written 6 March 2016
There is a fee to enter. I think the self tour is great and you will get a guide book that has a lot of great information in it.

How strenuous is the walking? My mom has some back problems.
Written 5 February 2016
We spent the day here when my 60 year old husband was too ill to spend the day on the beach. You can take a self guided walk at your own pace. Nothing strenuous, well worth the effort!

Can you please tell me the days you are open, and the hours you are open each day? We will be there mid-February and want to plan a visit. Thank you.
