This review comes a month after our wonderful tour with Akamai Adventure. Right from our initial contact, Hayley offered great support and advice about not only our trip to the Big Island but the other islands we were visiting as well. She paid attention to every detail and her passion was evident. And then the unimaginable happened in May! We were arriving on a cruise ship but due to the threatening lava flow our itinerary was changed causing disruptions to our plans, but we knew it didn't even compare to what the residents of Hilo were enduring. Amidst it all, Hayley continued to keep in good contact with me offering us different options and sharing her opinions all while she was dealing with the devastating volcanic conditions severely impacting not only her business but her family too. Our party of 15 are still very grateful for all she did to ensure we had the best experience possible...and we absolutely loved it!! We were greeted by a very kind gentleman, Kirk. The night before Hayley called to share that the van they were going to be using for our tour had some AC problems. Hayley did not want the van situation to be uncomfortable for us for a long day in the heat, so devised a resolution with Kirk and his wife Pandi drove a 2nd vehicle for our group. Both Pandi and Kirk were extremely knowledgeable and kind and passionate like Hayley. We viewed the Japanese Gardens, enjoyed a brief and interesting tour of Hilo Coffee Mill arranged by Kirk, enjoyed some yummy treats at Big Island Candies, and we rushed to beat the rain from the clouds Kirk was watching so we could explore a lava tube...VERY COOL!!! We went to an awesome roadside stand with amazing coconut & pineapple treats -so good! We also went to Rainbow Falls and the beautiful Akaka Falls (trail is wild with those Banyan trees and flowers). And trying to take advantage of every minute, Kirk and Pandi took us down a beautiful scenic road and along the coast to see the black sand beaches before our time expired. And I forgot to mention Kirk even made a stop to help me find some Volcano Wine from Volcano Winery. Although we were unable to see Volcanoes National Park, we learned Hilo's beauty extends far beyond the National Park. As Hayley shared with us, we were able to see mostly everything outside the park that we would have seen in the park. Our day was amazing! We all loved Hilo and were very grateful to have crossed paths with some truly genuine and wonderful people...Hayley, Kirk, and Pandi. As I type this our prayers continue for those in Hilo and all of Hawaii so they remain safe and there beautiful land is not destroyed further. Very grateful...

This is a LONG over due review (sorry Hayley and Kirk!) Akamai Adventure Tours gave myself and my friends the time of our lives in Hilo, Hawaii. I booked the tour prior to the eruption with the plans of touring the National Park and seeing lava. Hayley, the owner, called me prior to booking and we had a fantastic conversation about our trip and what we wanted to see. She was so friendly and knowledgeable - I booked immediately! When the volcano erupted, we knew our plans were going to change - and rightfully so. Hayley still had an awesome day planned for us. Our guide was Kirk Westin - and he was AMAZING! He called us prior to arrival to see if we wanted anything to drink and picked us up promptly. It was a private tour for my friends and I and he discussed with us what we wanted. We are adventurous types - and that is what we got! Trip Highlights included: - Hidden Coves to see surfers, amazing lava rock formations, and gorgeous waves - We went to Akaka Falls where Kirk encouraged us to enjoy the nature around us and go off the beaten path to really explore a beautiful banyan tree. We climbed and really took in the beauty of the magnificent trees. - We jumped off a bridge (eek!) and swam in a local spot where there was a lava tube with a waterfall coming out. How amazing is that? - We went to the black sand beaches and it looked like Heaven with the volcano in the distance. - We drank out of coconuts at a roadside stand and got Hawaiian shaved ice - Enjoyed a great dinner and conversation with Kirk at an unassuming Thai restaurant - At the end of the day, our tour was over in the allotted time. Kirk was trying to find us the great vantage point to see fissure 8, but he wasn't satisfied with the view. So - he spent an extra HOUR past the time we paid for and took us as close to the volcano as we could get (where the national guard check point is). While we couldn't see lava, it was pretty dang incredible to see the sky lit up. It felt like the end of the world and we wouldn't have ever had the chance to experience that without Kirk. -What was really special was Kirk's knowledge of the big island of Hawai'i. He knows so much about geology, plants, trees, waterfalls, history, social culture, the volcano, and more. He encouraged us to ask questions and really took the time to answer them. We just had an incredible day. One of my friends even fell and had a large bruise - and Kirk took the time to take us to a health food shop and get this amazing bruise cream that helped her immensely! Who can say their guide would do that? We heard so much from people - why are you going to Hilo? Why the big island? Well, let me tell you - it was the BEST. Hilo is a magical slice of Heaven and we cannot thank Kirk enough for the experience we had there. We will definitely be back. Thanks SO MUCH Kirk and Hayley! If you are doubting going to Hilo because you can't visit the volcano - DON'T DOUBT IT. Book with Hayley and Kirk and let them show you the hidden side of Hilo. We will definitely be back once the national park opens back up!

Our guide was Pandi, not Haley nor Tyler. Pandi is a good guide. She’s really friendly and she knows what she is talking about. However the tour did not live up to our expectations. It was for example not at all personalized. None of the information we provided on their question “one like/interest or hobby” was used or even known to the guide. We expected that our guide would take this into account. In one of the mails Haley wrote “This is an extremely terrific time to visit the Big Island, the Island of Hawaii where HISTORY is being made!!!” and we took the 1PM tour “allowing us to end by viewing the 150'-200' lava fountains at a distance--a great way to end a super fun day! “ . We didn’t really notice the extremely terrific time. We only saw the glow and it was amazing, but we didn’t see any lava fountains. We were already disappointed in the communication beforehand, which was not as it should be. We did see interesting things and Pandi, who filled in for Haley/Tyler, was a good guide, but we honestly find that it was not the premium tour that was described and expected. Maybe the eruption is at the root of this, but a reason or explanation was not provided to us.

We are a family of 5 with two teens (17 & 15) and an 11 year old. We really wanted to have a special experience at VNP and we had seen so many great reviews for Akamai Adventure Tours & Travel that we signed up! Well thank you, Trip Advisor reviews, because our tour really did live up to the hype. Our guide for the day was Tyler, and his breadth of knowledge of the local flora, legends, and geology was impressive. Just wish we could have written it all down! It's not always easy to reach three kids with very different interests, but Tyler managed it just fine, with kindness and a sense of humour to boot. We highly recommend Akamai - wish we could have budgeted for a second tour in another area of the island with them. We will for sure if we ever get to go back!

We started right on time at the visitor center with Hayley and her two lovely daughters. Hayley did an amazing job of giving us a deep understanding of the park more so than we could have ever gotten on our own. She kept our son (8yrs old) engaged with facts, stories, and history about both the park/volcano's and Hawaiian culture. We were all amazed with her knowledge of the park and all its surroundings. We had some rain during the day but it was all managed well by Hayley. She managed our stops during the tour around the weather. We were so lucky and got to see so many sights and gain so much insight to Hawaiian Culture and its significance. We met her husband who was extremely nice as well during our tour. It is for sure a time I think all of us will cherish for our lifetime. We would all highly recommend Akamai tours. Thanks So Much - Jennifer,Keller and Derek Companion
