The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is a 501(c)(3) Scientific and Educational non-profit, whose mission is to serve as a nature preserve and sanctuary, a living seed bank, and a study center for trees and plants of the tropical world. The Garden is dedicated to the collection and display of the world's tropical plants, and to the education of both children and adults about the plight of the world's rainforests. At a time when rainforest plants are disappearing at an alarming rate, the Garden is working to preserve as many species as possible for the benefit of future generations.

Have been visiting the Big Island since 1992 and adore this garden! So many beautiful orchids, huge ferns, massive tree sized plants which I'm only used to seeing in nurseries and greenhouse stores! Very informative staff - Ryan in the orchard garden showed us so many unusual and somewhat hidden examples of his charges! Wear walking shoes, insect repellent is... More

Admission is $15 per person, which helps maintain this nearly 50 year-old creation. It is a restful edition to a beach day. The gardens contain many grand plant specimens from around the world. I would have preferred that the displays were of Hawaii native species, and hope nothing is invasive. The gardens contain a blowhole in a small sea cave,... More

So many crazy beautiful plants, trees, flowers, etc etc it is overwhelming! They even have a golf cart to take visitors up and down a steep walk if you aren't able to hoof it. This gorgeous garden is on a scenic road you will also enjoy. $15 adult admission and it is worthy of the cost.

First off, the scenic drive from Hilo to the Gardens is worth it alone. The gardens themselves are beautiful and are a nice easy stroll from the road through the grounds to great views over the ocean. If you're driving around the east of Hawaii, this is a great place to stop for an hour or so.

This garden is on my must do list every time I'm in the area and is a plant/flower lovers paradise. There is a mile or so walk through a tropical with spectacular blooms at every turn even some blooms on plants that I didn't think bloomed. The walk includes ocean views and a picnic area to visit, water falls, and... More

There is a 4 mile scenic drive just north of Hilo. That's where you will find this garden. It looks like nothing from the road. It is a garden built down the sides of a gulch, down to the ocean. It is a paved walkway, with handrails for assistance, but it is fairly steep. If you have problems with mobility,... More

This is a beautiful park, well worth the price of admission. Photo ops at every turn and not excessively crowded. We enjoyed the two hours spent there.

Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is about 15 minutes outside of Hilo. The land was purchased in 1978. The founders spent six years clearing the property and creating trails leading down to the shoreline and Onomea Bay. The Garden consists of 37 acres and is now a non-profit nature reserve. The trail down is fairly steep but golf carts are available... More

This was a gorgeous walk down to the water. All of the many plants (Not necessarily native) are well documented. Its wonderful for the serious gardener as well as those just enjoying the flowers. It is a trip down the side of the mountian, but for those who can't make it back up, a golfcart ride is available to return... More

A beautiful walk! The plants and sights you will see are breathtaking. The beginning of the walk is a steep decent, so the walk back to parking lot is a steep climb. However, once you get into the gardens, the walk is very easy. Take time to see it all.
