The guide has been fantastic. Thanks to him we could see the lava very close, we walked one hour to reach it! Really hard to find but our guide was really an expert! Fortunately we saved 2 miles because they could drive us with a van into the road - you can't do it with your own car. At the... More

My boyfriend and I did the lava hike yesterday 30/11. What we did we could have definitely done ourselves Positives: * Tour guide went off looking for surface flow whilst we went down to the ocean entry point. Although there was none it was nice he did it * we got driven in the first 2 miles and then back... More

We had booked a private hiking tour (for two) at 4 pm (sunset) from kalapana cultural tour on-line. Reservations were easy online with good driving directions. Our guide Herb was very patina te about the mountain and the volcano. We started with a van ride 2 miles into the crater road so less to hike. We then started to hike... More

When you arrive at the viewing site where the Kilauhea volcanic lava is flowing into the ocean you are greeted by a host of bike rental vendors. You must test our the bike before you begin the ride as many bikes are in very poor shape. We chose ours from Kalapana Cultural Tours. Their bikes were very new, had shocks,... More

This was a truly unique experience that I highly recommend for anyone visiting the Big Island. We did the bike and hike combo which is great as it cuts off a huge chunk of time travelling over a dirt road to the spot where you can truly hike on the lava fields. And going with Kalapana is ideal because their... More

It's hard for me to write such a harsh review, because the captain was great! The ride out was fun, but the misinformation resulted in a very disappointing experience for me! My goal was to view lava somewhat in the dark (sunset or sunrise), and I inquired about that from the very beginning on walking tour first. Then I decided to... More

Capt Kai and crew were great at navigating the choppy seas (take drammamine or get scopolamine patch from DR) down to the lava entering the sea. As a charter boat captain on Oahu, I can definitely say that these guys are way better with only 6 passengers max than the one with 49max. They got soooo close to the lava!... More

We rented bikes with Kalapana Cultural Tours to bike to the ocean entry. Was great way to see the ocean entry. The bikes provided were in good shape, and they gave us flashlights, head lamps, a first aid kit, and a bike lock. They also have "emergency assistance" available if your bike broke down or something happened, which was reassuring.... More

We are so glad we went with a family run business. Our tour guide, Trevor, was extremely kind and we had a great time getting to know him during our tour. There were only two of us, so my husband and I were able to learn a lot from Trevor about growing up in this volatile part of the island... More

After making a few hike (and bike) trips out to the lava viewing with friends, I decided to try a boat tour for a closer view of the ocean entry. Kalapana Cultural Tours is a group I'd seen around over a few years of visits so I started with them first at their lava viewing stand and was able to... More
