Interesting enough
May 2021
First visit to a black sand beach. Of course, like much of the island, the accompanying vistas oceanward were phenomenal. The views of the rather overcrowded beach were less impressive. But still, it was easy access and a chance to see the black 'sand' up close and personal.

Super cool experience
May 2021 • Friends
This beach is so cool. The black sand is much softer than I anticipated it would be. We saw two sea turtles on the beach which was a highlight of the trip. There is a super cute pond behind the beach area full of beautiful flowers. The water is a bit rough and choppy here so beginner snorkeling is a no go. There’s tide pools and there are little crabs and eels in there.

Beautiful Beach for Picnic
May 2021
We have been to black sand beaches in Maui and this is the most beautiful one. If we had known that there're picnic tables on a lush lawn facing a pond, we would have prepared some food to have lunch here after the strenuous hike at Green Sand Beach. Worth visiting.

Sea turtles and black sand
May 2021
It was crowded but not too crowded. We were just there to walk around and look for turtles. We saw 5 sea turtles resting on the sand. The hiking was nice. It was VERY windy. The water was very rough so we didn’t go in it. But the hiking on the beach and around it as well as the turtles made it something that I would do again and again.

Black sand beach and turtles
Apr 2021
I had planned a brief stop here to see the turtles and take a couple of photos and move on but it was so beautiful, we were here for far longer. There were 3 turtles sleeping quietly on the sand posing for pictures. My son loved running around on the lava rocks and dipping his toes in the water. The black sand is so much fun to play in. Definitely worth the stop.

Really cool to see!
Apr 2021
We actually drove down from Kona for no other reason and were not disappointed. We saw four turtles and the amazing black sand - so cool! The day we were there there was no swimming or snorkeling because of the currents but we didn't plan to do either so we weren't disappointed. There are picnic tables and a small shop but we didn't use either. We did get some great photos and it was really awesome to see the turtles. Might not be worth the drive for some people but if you are on your way to Hilo or to the volcano you should take the short trip just to put your feet into the soft black sand (it was not hot when we were there but I can see how it would be!). If the weather and currents are cooperating it seems like it would be a great place to spend a beach day.

Black sand check, turtles check
Mar 2021
Just as advertised. Strong protection for turtles basking on the beach. Not surprisingly, sand gets pretty warm. Didn't stick around too long.

Sea turtles and black sandy beach
Mar 2021
We stayed in Pahoa and spent an hour here before doubling back to Volcano National Park. I'm so glad we came. It was raining off and on, but we were able to explore the beach and watch one sea turtle napping on the beach (with lots of space behind cones), as well as 3 others hanging out in the water and shore. The beach had a lifeguard station (one family was snorkeling but it didn't look very easy), a souvenir station with t-shirts and jewelry, and some shade. Two parking lots and a restroom facility. I wish we could have spent more time here!

Black Sand and Turtles
Mar 2021
Been there twice, both times there were several turtles in the water. Black sand is coarse, but beautiful. It glistens in the sun. Does get hot though.
Beach has many rocks, so reef shoes are helpful.

Don't go if you want beautiful soft sand and sandy bottom. Go if you are into black sand and turtles.

Turtles, No
Feb 2021 • Couples
Worth a quick stop if you are headed over to see the volcanoes - quick mile or so detour off of Highway 11. The sand is deliciously fine and truly black. Surf too rough for my taste and no turtles. Other than the black sand, just an average beach.
