This should be must see.on the Big island. Great views, cliffs and chance to be on the southern most point on US. It is on the way to National Park from Kona. Go to watch sunset.

I visited the Southernmost Point in the United States in June 2023 with my fiancé. I thought it was a great experience and I highly recommend that you visit if you have the time. The drive out to the Southernmost Point is beautiful with wide yellow grassy farms and large ocean cliffs. I thought seeing that part of the Big Island while driving was worth the visit alone. When you get to the Southernmost Point it’s a little bit rough. There is no real parking lot or signage. We saw a conglomeration of people and what seemed to be diving platforms. Also at this location was a giant cave type rock entrance that led out to the ocean. I am typically one who loves to cliff jump. There was no one else jumping that day so I didn’t want to get hurt myself or kill myself on my first day on the island. We walked down a little further where more people were spread out. Eventually the ocean meets a little beach made all of coral. Its quite the sight to look out to the pacific knowing there is nothing for miles. I am giving this location only 4 out of 5 stars because there is no real bathroom in the area and the location is not properly marked with correct signage. I did find everyone we met to be friendly but there is no security at all and no safeguards on the cliffside. I would not recommend bringing kids to this location because the ground is unstable and there are many dangerous areas. Once you arrive you could probably see the whole spot in about a half hour.

Ka Lae (Hawaiian: the point), also known as South Point, is the southernmost point of the Big Island of Hawaii and of the 50 United States. The Ka Lae area is registered as a National Historic Landmark District under the name South Point Complex. The area is also known for its strong ocean currents and winds and is the home of a wind farm.
Ka Lae is accessible via South Point Road, a 12-mile paved narrow road leading from State Route 11 (Hawaii Belt Road). The strong winds cause some trees to become almost horizontal with their branches all growing in the same direction near the ground. There is also a green sand beach here but it is only accessible by a fairly long, steep trail, so we opted not to go there.

This should be an absolute must visit in Hawaii. It was gorgeous. We came for the cliff diving. The ladder is broken half way up so you can’t get out of the water. It would be a very dangerous climb up the cliffs with the swells in the water. There is a beautiful beach at the end of south point that you have to see. It is covered in coral and had huge waves. The sun was setting while we were there and it was amazing. I can’t believe this place is not talked about more.

South Point is a bit out of the way when driving around the island but worth a stop. It's down a narrow, not well maintained road. Once you reach the end of the road, you have to walk a ways past the light beacon and down to a low wall to reach the actual southernmost point. Unlike Key West there is no sign and no crowds. Not much to do around but it is cool to say you there. According to the guidebook historians think this is where the first people arrived to the islands.

Drove out the the most southern point of the United States. Pretty drive. Not much to do or see out there but fun to say you were there!

Great views, amazing wave action for viewing. It can get really hot out there and minimal amenities so bring sunscreen and water (I guess that's a given for anywhere on the island). There are porta potties, but they didn't look very "fresh". Definitely worth a visit if you're traveling through the area

The Southern most Point of the U.S. is a mix of farmland and barren wind-swept landscapes. Even if you are not going to jump off of the cliff, bring a windbreaker and a jacket.

On this island of extremes, the south point is another contrast - windy, dry, dramatic. It is beautiful and thought-provoking - what was life like here 500 years ago? 10,000? this is what I kept wondering, as it seems easier to reflect on those big ideas here away from modern life with all its conveniences and challenges.

This was our 3rd visit here. This time brought friends. Enjoyed walking around and chatting with fishermen. Fun/quick stop then headed to Green Sand Beach.
