Its a long drive down from the main road down to south point but the view is beautiful. I personally thought that the view on the other end of the island near King Kamehameha's birthplace on Kohala Coast is even more spectacular. You can then...More

The trip to South Point is worth the long drive. The view is amazing and it is exhilarating watching people jump from the cliff, and we even watched a guy jump into the narrow cavern. It is also an amazing adrenaline pumping jump, but as...More

As everyone else mentions, this is a long drive and the road narrows and gets rough closer to the point. The road has actually gotten better than when I was here 16 years ago and the narrowing only happens because part of the one lane...More

So close to green sand beach, if you are out there, its a must see! On your way to Papakolea beach, you will notice a green car door on the right hand side of the road about a mile or two before you reach Papakolea....More

12 miles off Mamalahoa and please share the road. It tapers off and parking is off road to say the least. The walk is back a dusty road and your feet will get dirty; but the waves and the sound and the view are more...More

While on the Big Island of Hawaii, make sure you take a trip to South Point to not only see the southern most point of all the US but to jump off the cliffs into the clear water below. The jump is about 50 feet...More

We got there kind of late in the day so we hired the truck driver ($15 round trip) and it was such a fun and bumpy ride. But when we got there it was worth every penny. The beach, the rocks around it, the colors,...More

Over and over we all shared how glad we were that we did not skip this hard-to-get-to spot! After reading other reviews we decided to park our 4WD and walk in, and I am glad we did. I'm glad we walked in because it was...More

I have been to a lot of beaches, but this one is absolutely breathtaking! You cannot visit the big island of Hawaii and not make time to see this one!! Few things to keep in mind though: 1) Unless you want to hike the 3...More

The hike to the green sand beach is hot and dry but we enjoyed it. Some locals are set up to drive you to the beach if you would like; I heard them asking $15 each, for I guess a round trip ride. We decided...More

They will approach you on the parking area. I think the hike itself added to the experience though and I wouldn't pay for the ride personally. I would suggest being sunscreens up as it's very windy and you don't realize... More

I wouldn't cliff jump unless you have snorkeld the water to check for depth or rock spires. And don't swim these waters without lifeguard present....several people drown per day in Hawaii....and good swimmers too... More
Are the "locals" just waiting at the entrance to give the rides to the South Point, and do they wait for us for the ride back? Do they tell you what they charge? We are over 70 and just want picture of the South Point and maybe to walk on the green sand beach. Thanks

Yes, locals are there waiting when you drive in. We paid $15 per person. Ask them to be in the cab, otherwise you're in the box of the truck. It's very windy out there, wear close toed shoes too. Enjoy!!
