Description:

Waipio On Horseback offers special guided excursions on horseback in...

Waipio On Horseback offers special guided excursions on horseback in secluded Waipi'o Valley. Our small groups savor the charm of this 2 1/2 hour adventure in old Hawaii.

This trek takes a leisurely pace. Our guides narrate throughout the ride, explaining the history, legends and facts of life in the valley. The path meanders through lush jungle trails along the hillside; through streams and rivers; and on to ancient Hawaiian villages. Riders see dramatic 1,200-foot waterfalls, taro patches, lotus ponds, wild horses, exotic flowers, plants, native trees and birds. See one of Hawaii's oldest forms of farming that produces taro, a Hawaiian staple that helps feed our local community.

We meet at the WOH Barn located 7-1/2 miles toward Waipio from Honokaa. Riders travel via four-wheel drive vehicle into Waipi'o Valley-ancient Hawaii's "Valley of the Kings." We depart from the WOH Barn at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm daily. The trail ride begins on the valley floor. Then a four-wheel drive vehicle takes the riders out of the valley and drops them off back at the WOH Barn.

A minimum of two and a maximum of fourteen riders are allowed on each excursion. Refunds are given on cancellations received in our office 24 hours or more in advance of the reserved ride time.

Because of our remote location, reservations are required at least 24 hours in advance. Weather plays a vital role in this tour's operation and can change rapidly. In case of hard rain or flood conditions, this tour is subject to cancellation. We will give as much advance warning as soon as possible in these situations.

This is a unique and active tour. We recommend guests be agile and in good health. We suggest pants and covered shoes. Children under twelve years of age will be accepted if they are with a responsible adult or are experienced riders.

The guides were fun and shared history of the area. I brought a friend and she loved the experience. Our horses were a little stubborn but that was ok. The valley is beautiful and riding across the rivers was awesome. We were given fresh berries and fruit to sample. The countryside was unbelievable and the drive down to the valley... More

My family of 4 loved our morning with the horses, meandering through little rivers in the picturesque valley. The ride down is a bit harrowing, but that is part of the fun. The guides were great and the horses were tame. We would definitely recommend WOH!

I would totally recommend this ride. It is a great way to experience the lushness of the valley. The guides were friendly and very talkative. They offered lots of information and help with the horses.

We loved this tour of the valley on horseback! It is led by locals, who know and love their home. We are in danger of loving beautiful places to death, and the Waipio Valley could be one of those places. Instead of just going in yourself, I'd say take this tour, and pay the people for the privilege of coming... More

The valley is a must see! Couldn't imagine a better way to do it than on horseback. The guides and horses were very kind and gentle. So much fun!

Both of our guides were knowledgeable and super friendly making the entire experience very fun. The horses were well trained and cared for and knew their job. The ride itself is slow allowing plenty of time to take pictures and learn about the valley, the wild horses and the plants. It was an easy ride so that someone who has... More

Good way to see Waipio Valley. Horses were well trained & matched well with each rider. It would have been nice if the course was a loop instead of up/back the same trail (this could've been due to recent flooding in the valley, though). Bring bug spray. Samplings of fresh local fruit and mac nuts in the shell were available... More

We explored much of the Big island and everyone agreed that this was our favorite activity. Our two guides grew up in the valley and were very friendly and knowledgeable. The driver was slow and careful during the 4WD trek into and out of the valley. Gorgeous scenery-waterfalls, rivercrossings, fruit trees and wild horses! Our 9 & 11 year old... More
