My wife and I drove to experience the Waipi'o Valley Overlook and while doing some research about nearby places of interest , I read about the Heritage Center. It was a low key but very interesting trip into the cultural , ethnic , economic and World War II look into the history of the town of Honokaa.
The staff was very friendly and helpful and we not only enjoyed our visit , we learned quite a bit. It's not that far from Hilo and the Akaka Falls as well.

We read about the North Hawai'i Research Center's Heritage Center in the January, 2020, issue of 'Ke Ola' magazine and felt it was the kind of place we like to visit. We were not disappointed! The lady in charge graciously opened each of the two rooms and let us spend as long as we wanted. The displays are quite self-explanatory and present a fascinating picture of "Old Hawaii," especially the Waipi'o Valley and the town of Waimea.

This is a great place to discover more about local history and heritage. Their exhibits are representative the diversity of local culture. There is also an exhibit devoted to Waipiʻo, definitely worth bringing the family to see. Keep an eye out for their events, particularly talk story with the paniolo. Halloween they had a haunted house where the kids got to trick or treat inside the museum!
