You won't find a more patient, understanding, and helpful teacher out there. Bill and co. are the nicest bunch...honest, fair, and interesting, too. I went there to get my PADI certification and learned a lot while also fulfilling the requisite maneuvers set by PADI. They were even willing to take me out for an extra day if I didn't finish... This is a great shop, and Bill is the Zen Master of diving. I was signed up to get PADI dive certified through Nautilus, but was a little nervous about it--Bill was very patient, and walked me through everything step by step. The first day of training didn't go well--not Bill's fault, but due to problems with the mask I... More

My girlfriend and I spontaneously signed up to get our open water certs at Nautilus Dive Center. Thankfully Bill and Masako were very knowledgeable and got us set up with our PADI courses and in less than a week we started our first dive. Masako made sure we had everything we needed while Bill took us to Richardsons and Puhi... More

I was there for PADI advanced open water cert. Did 5 dives in two days. Booked online for 5 dives over 3 days but they recommended over 2 days when I got there which I recommend due to the rapid weather changes/dive conditions. First day was 3 dives and I was exhausted as entry/exit was over large lava rocks which... More

I went to Nautilus for my Advanced Open Water PADI certification earlier this month. Bill and Masako run a fantastic operation. The equipment is high quality and they work together in a seamless and efficient way. They are also two of the nicest people you could hope to meet! In the five dives I went on with Bill, I was... I hadn't been on a dive since certification a few years ago and I couldn't have asked for a better dive master to help me get back into it. Bill is just an all around great guy--low key, considerate, and very experienced (34 years diving in Hawaii and over 400 dives last year alone). He knows a bunch of walk-in... More

Bill DeRooy is the most Eco-friendly divemaster that I have had the pleasure to dive with over the years. his and Masako's Nautilus Dive Center has been there for 34 years. Every dive is a different adventure, but seeing the unexpected is the norm. No matter if you are new to diving, or an 'old hand' at it Bill never... More

Masala and Bill were great, Bill is a very skilled and knowledgable instructor, I did my open water certification and could not have asked for a better teacher. Bill was very knowledgable about the area and the ocean life we encountered, would recommend for any level of diver. If I ever make it back I will definitely book a dice... More

Masako and Bill are two of the sweetest people you will meet in Hilo. Bill has owned the shop for over 30 years and is the best teacher you could ask for in the water. He will make you feel safe and share a lot of knowledge about the island, diving, and the species within it. He is a huge... More

Diving with Bill and Tom was amazing! They were both very kind, knowledgeable and understanding of what we wanted from a dive. My husband and I took two incredible shore dives with them. Their equipment is top rate and their knowledge of sea life is incredible. Bill and Tom both care deeply about sea life, especially the coral and protecting... More
