We stopped at the lava tube on the way to Hilo. We spent about 45 minutes there. It's amazing how dark it is inside with no flashlights. It was neat to walk around. You don't need a ton of time there, though.

We came upon this by accident. We happened to see the sign as we were driving from Hilo back to Kailua-Kona, so we stopped. These caves (lave tubes, really) are not lighted, there is no improved walkway inside the caves, but it is a fantastic place to visit. My daughter and I took a 45 minute walk into the caves,... We were looking for something free to do for a little while around the Hilo airport area while we killed some time before a helo tour. Found this site on tripadvisor and thought we would do it. There are bathrooms. The water fountain did not work. Please wear closed-toe shoes- actually we wore tennis shoes. I would be very hesitant... More

If you like natural wonders, you'll like this attraction. The price is right ($0) too. An example of a lava flow. Nice adventure during an afternoon drive around the island

Kinda crazy that it's just under the road, no one nearby to monitor safety or charge you fees. It's just an amazing cave that's all yours! They do have bathrooms here though. It was so cool to climb dowm inside. You could take your kids (5 and older) here or come alone. Bring a flash light!

Really excellent activity! This was a truly spectacular experience (for free!) that for us was unlike anything else we did on the Big Island. My husband and I spent about two hours exploring the caves. We noticed some conflicting/vague reviews below so here are our thoughts on these caves. What to bring: We agree with the reviews that say to... More

This is an amazing example of the lava flows that created Hawaii and left behind very interesting examples of nature's power!

Mel of Miranda's Tour Company went extra miles to show the island. It was the best tour on the Big Island, Hawaii. Keep up the good work Mel. Thanks. Sangita Pal

The park has clean restrooms and even a shaded picnic pavilion. There is a steep stairs to the entrance. It is very lush outside the cave. The right side has wider opening but not as deep as the left side. You are going to need a flashlight and good shoes. Don't wear flipflops.
