We went to see the Makaha Sons concert at the theater and really enjoyed the concert. We are great fans of the Makaha Sons and to see them in person really made our visit worthwhile. The Palace Theater is a very old theater and probably in need of some improvement, but it would take a lot of generous help to... More

We were staying with friends in Hilo. They got tickets for us to see Kuana Torres Kahele at the Palace Theater. He as helping them with a benefit to help raise money for the continued upkeep and upgrading they are doing. This is a wonderful theater. They have concerts and show movies. A nice lobby. Right now they hand out... More

The old theater is still grand with a patina that has to be earned. We were there for the Nutcracker and it was filled with families and the theater seemed epic; ageless. Sure it needs AC and some renovation but it is priceless.

This is a historic building with the architecture familiar to Fox theater patrons. It has ambiance and it's intimate. Unfortunately, its in need of repairs to make it fully appreciated. The carpets are worn, the paint is chipping, and the bathroom is barely functioning. I only attended a show there once in June of 2015, and the worst part was... More

We lucked out and were in town when Makana was playing at the Palace. What a treat. He toured the world this year, and came back to the islands to share his Hawaiian slack key guitar music once again. Most small towns had a Palace Theater of some sort; many have been torn down and a few restored. Its not... More

Our B&B hostess recommended this over gimmicky luau to see authentic hula. The attendees were all local. This show had beginners who were just learning and dancing for their families to pros and professional Hawaiian singers. It was an incredibly special night and the Theater suited the event. It felt authentic, very comfortable with good sound and sight lines.

Just happened to be in Hilo when they were doing a local production of the Mel Brooks musical, Young Frankenstein. Was amazed at how good it was. The musical director worked for 25 years on Saturday Night Live and brought out some great performances. I think they only do these shows a few times a year, so keep that in... More
