We stayed at the Grand Naniloa. We could see this little island from our lanai. After breakfast, we walked the Banyan drive to check out the other hotels. A bridge connects the mainland to this little island park. From the park, you have nice sea view of the hotels.

If you're wandering around Hilo then this is a cute little place. Don't go out of your way to visit, but if you're in the area then picnic lunch here would be delightful. We even had a couple of turtles swim around nearby while we were there.

Coconut island, still cute and crowded, and you still can swim off of it, eat your picnic. They used to have small music events many years ago, I wonder if they still do?

We were not expecting any beach in/near Hilo. After a day of seeing waterfalls and rainforest, my daughter was especially excited to find Coconut Island. It was filled with locals and families enjoying the grass, lava and water. It does not really have beach but she sure wished she had her swimsuit so she could jump in the water with... More

A short walk from the Banyan drive hotels brings you to Coconut island and Liliuokalani park. Here you get to enjoy the quiet easy pace of the east side of the Big Island and the friendliness of the people of Hilo. This area is part of the allure of the Hilo area of the island. Sudden showers and rainbows are... More

We were walking around the nearby gardens and came to see the Island. There were a few people swimming and jumping off the stone structures, but we didn't partake - Might be more fun if you're there to swim. Pretty views of the water, but it also just seemed to be a rather seedy place. I felt it's probably the... More

This little island is cute in a touristy way but is guaranteed to be crowded and offers nothing particularly special. Walk on over if your hotel is nearby but don't bother otherwise.

Coconut Island is a nice place to have a family picnic. There are limited picnic blets, however there are some shady area to sit on a blanket and enjoy the scenery. If you want you can also go swimming.
