The Heart Mountain Interpretive Center is located at the site of a former World War II Japanese American Relocation Camp. Shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese Americans on the West Coast were rounded up and confined in 10 camps around the country. One of these was located at Heart Mountain, and approximately 14,000 Japanese Americans were wrongly incarcerated here. The camp today features a museum, gallery, walking tour, original Relocation Camp structures and a World War II Memorial. The museum features interactive exhibits for visitors of all ages showing how Japanese Americans coped with unjust confinement and how the story of Japanese American imprisonment affects our lives today. A 14-minute introductory film plays several times each hour.

Amazing museum highlighting the interment of Japanese Americans during World War 2. OK for younger kids (6-12), but you might have to read a lot to them and explain a few things. Some hands on activities. The staff were amazing and did a great job telling the history of what went on.

This was one of the highlights of our road trip through Wyoming and Montana and into the Canadian Rockies. That says a lot because of the spectacular sights available in all of those locations. The significance of the history traced here and the quality way it was done and presented makes it a sight that all Americans should see. After... More

A guide on a Mustang trip spoke a few words about the story of the Japanese at Heart Mountain. Personally I had never even heard their story and had no knowledge of anything like this ever happening! The museum is very, very good. Start with the video. Can get pretty emotional.

This is a must to visit so we all can learn about the history of what happened here. It's quite moving and an excellent museum. You won't regret stopping here and learning what happened. Be sure and see the movie they show here as well.

a really emotional experience seeing how the Japanese and the Japanese-Americans were singled out and interned only from the west coast during the time of war.

Amazing! I had no idea this was there until exploring the Internet. The displays were very realistic including several done in 3-D and real life. Several aritifacts were left from the Internment time in the 1940's. Sad time in US history but understandable given what had happened at the time. Take time to visit it all, allow at least 2... Heart Mountain was one of 10 Japanese Relocation Centers in WWII, and the Interpretive Center strives to preserve the limited remains, and to tell the story of the estimated 14,000 "incarcerees". Nobody is entirely certain what to call them since they were US citizens, deprived of their rights and freedom for no reasons beyond their race and for living in... More

Walking through the museum and gallery, one thought recurred, this could happen in America today. Found myself proud of these Americans who made the best out of circumstances beyond their control and remained proud to be Americans, even fighting for their country. Heart Mountain would qualify as one of the largest towns in Wyoming at the time. Today it would... More

In these times of such hateful political rhetoric, this is a must-see. Thoughtful, sobering exhibits that bring to life a shameful chapter in American history. Highly recommend a visit.

This is a place we all need to see. It gave me such a better understanding of what happened to the Japanese during World War II. It is just a short ways out of Cody and well worth the time and effort.
