Description:

Taliesin, the home, studio and country estate of Frank Lloyd Wright, is...

Taliesin, the home, studio and country estate of Frank Lloyd Wright, is located in the hilly Driftless Region of southwestern Wisconsin near Spring Green. It is the name of Wright's house as well as the 800-acre estate that includes buildings from all decades of Wright's career. Taliesin has a commanding presence in Jones Valley, the watershed where Wright's Lloyd Jones ancestors settled after immigrating from Wales in the 1860s. Taliesin was named in honor of his Welsh heritage, was the name of a druid bard, and literally means "shining brow." Its many wings and terraces reach out around the ridge of the hill, embracing the site and standing as "brow." Taliesin was the principal residence of Wright as a mature designer, and the valley was his inspiration and life-long laboratory for architectural designs and innovation. Taliesin in its three iterations (1911, 1914, 1925) represents the most complete embodiment of Wright's philosophy of Organic Architecture. The Taliesin residence is the heart of a series of buildings that Wright designed for himself and his family members on the estate. Other buildings include: Romeo & Juliet Windmill (1896), Hillside Home School (1903), Tan-y-Deri (1908), Hillside Drafting Studio (1932), Midway Barn (1949), Hillside Theater (1952), and the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center (1967).

Do not miss the opportunity to visit this FLW house. One he build for himself to live in. Still very much alive with the Talisien school of architecture. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and had personally interviewed the apprentices still living ar Taliesin. I will for sure go again. The 2 hour tour seemed like 10 minutes.

We took the two hour house tour, the only one offered in April when we visited. The docent was very knowledgeable about the architectural details of the property and about Frank Lloyd Wright's life. The stories about the man and his life were as interesting as the house itself. This is a must for all Wright fans and for those... More

I've seen photos of Taliesin but seeing in person is completely different. It was an experience not just a tour.

We are happy we had the opportunity to visit Taliesin. Although the house and gardens were not as "ready" for tours as they will be in the summer, we enjoyed our tour very much. Our guide Jill made our visit special, and we enjoyed being part of a small group.

Overall, very well, but needs lots of restoration. Would have like to see the entire estate, however, tenets live in part of the space.

I was lucky enough to have a solo tour with Livja through the house. Our running conversation as we went through the spaces was just wonderful, so different than being in a group with a set speech. I know this circumstance is different than other tours would most likely be but the house is a really interesting lesson on the... More

We visited Taliesin with five boys ages 8-16. Frank Lloyd Wright's home is an inspiration and our Docent was engaging and provided information made it interesting for all.

Great visit. Amazing house that is the definition of a money pit. Must have been great to live there in the nice weather but can't imagine being there in winter. I guess that's why FLW also had Taliesin West!

A wonderful experience. Wisconsin produces some outstanding history that should be shared with all, Taliesin Preservation does just that. Great way to get in to the very creative mind of Mr. Wright. The only issue we had was the tour guide was getting over an illness and her voice was weak. Difficult to hear in the wind. There was also... More
