Most cities have torn down their classic city halls in favor of a big box store look and feel. But not Milwaukee. This classic is beautiful and credit to the city. Well worth a quick stop to look in.

Even today, the Milwaukee City Hall stands out as an architectural landmark, the one-time marketing symbol of the Wisconsin city, the tallest building (15 floors, 353 feet tall) in Milwaukee from 1895 to 1973. Located at 200 East Wells Street, City Hall was designed by architect Henry C. Koch in the Flemish Renaissance Revival style, based on both German precedent and local examples such as the Pabst Mansion. The foundation consists of 2,584 white pine piles that were driving into the marshy land surrounding the Milwaukee River. The upper part of the tower was rebuilt after a fire in 1929. The bell tower continues to be used as a municipal icon. City Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2005. It remained the second tallest building in Milwaukee until 1985.

We popped into City Hall as we walked around the area. It is a really interesting building from an architecture perspective, both inside and out. It is a working city hall, so visitors are welcome to wander throughout the building during business hours. Inside the building, we took the elevator to the top floor, where we could see the glass atrium roof close enough to tell that some of the historic panes are cracked. We then walked down the well-worn stairs which keep the secrets of over a century of use. Recommend a visit if you enjoy architecture and history. We wished there had been some historic city photos and artifacts on display.

Any fan of Laverne and Shirley or Happy Days will enjoy the sights of Milwaukee. Made me want to Schlemiel and Schlimazel! Did not have the "Welcome to Milwaukee" I remember from the show opener.

City Hall and the Pabst Mansion are surviving examples of Flemish Renaissance Revival. This style must've been popular with the German immigrants of the 19th Century. My husband and I saw this impressive old building while walking around the city for a couple of days.

The story of the building is quite interesting; I was astonished to learn that the foundation includes almost 2600 white pine pilings. This building, built in 1895, seems to have lasted in good health into this century and may outlast many of the more modern buildings around it.

If you are walking around downtown Milwaukee I recommend that you seriously consider going by the Milwaukee city hall and checking it out. It is definitely an imposing structure and you should definitely see it. It is well-designed and has much architectural appeal, it anchors the city center.

Make sure you go inside and check out how the interior is designed, truly breathtaking and amazing. If you love architecture, don't miss this.

The Milwaukee City Hall building is a very photogenic building with lots of terra cotta details and fascinating architecture. You can access the common areas of the building during normal working hours and view the unique atrium and mosaic tile floors on the main level. In Sept during Doors Open MKE you can get access to the mayor's office and the city council room and if you get online tickets you can climb up to the bell tower and enjoy spectacular views of the city and ring the bell. If you are around on this weekend it is well worth it - if not the building is still very interesting. It is currently surrounded by construction fencing due to ongoing foundation work but it is still beautiful.

Milwaukee downtown is amazing in general. One can walk and enjoy the architecture of the buildings, most of which are really beautiful. The City Hall is in perfect harmony with everything else - I made couple of circles around it as I have never seen a city hall with similar architecture and I was amazed.
If you are in Milwaukee you won't regret seeing this amazing building

We met here for a tour, and took the opportunity to go inside. Not being an expert of building styles, I can say that this is a unique building with a large center courtyard. (that in the past had 8 suicides from jumping from the top floor).
This is a working government building, so you won't be exploring the different floors, but if you like architecture, this is worthy of a visit.
