About
Welcome to a great place to learn, play and explore the rich maritime history of Wisconsin and the Great Lakes region. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum offers visitors a unique place to spend hours learning about the sailors, shipbuilders and submariners who made that history, and to have some great family fun! Founded in 1970 as the Manitowoc Submarine Memorial Association, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum has grown into one of the largest maritime museums in the Midwest. In addition to commemorating the maritime heritage of the Manitowoc-Two Rivers area and the submarines built here during World War II, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum is now a leader in preserving the maritime history of Wisconsin and the Great Lakes region.

This was a private (family) museum tour and overnight on the USS Cobia. It was EXTREMELY educational and elicits much appreciation for our enlisted.

Located in downtown Manitowoc, WI the WI Maritime Museum provides the opportunity to step back in time to WWII. Through photos, films, articles & displays you can feel the pride in our country during that time. After touring the museum you can also tour a submarine. The USS Cobia, built in Groton, Ct. is the type that was actually built in Manitowoc, WI. As you tour the sub you feel the tight quarters, heat & see items that were actually used in the war effort. What a great way to experience history rather than just read about it. A large parking lot is adjacent to the museum & the area offers restaurants close by in addition to the beautiful paved path winding along the river. Benches have been placed so you can just sit & relax, take photos of the distant lighthouse. A perfect location for a day excursion that is also educational

The museum was laid out well. A variety of exhibits from entire small ships, an old steam engine, and some interactive displays were there. Lots of maps. We didn’t tour the submarine as we did not have enough time.

The tour of the bridge and command center was marvelous. Rob and Rich showed us the inside story of the ship and it was special because one of them served on the ship and one was currently in the Navy . The ship is huge and impressive and it needs visitors to help with the upkeep. Highly recommend this tour and the museum.

This was a very big museum of all things Great Lakes. Plan to take a few hours or more when visiting. Make sure and tour the submarine, let kids play in water area, and check out all the boats and ship wreck displays.

If in Manitowoc this is a must to see. This is a great experience especially if one was in the Navy.

We had a wonderful time taking the kids up to the rooftop Sub Pub at this maritime museum. They played life size Battle Ship, while we enjoyed the live music across the river. Reasonable prices. Comfortable seats. Gorgeous view. Super service. Five stars across the board.

Manitowoc was our last big stop before heading home the next day with our sights set on the Maritime Museum. The museum is located right on the the Manitowoc River not far west of Lake Michigan with the submarine the USS Cobia resting in the river. We had some time before the tour so we looked at some of the well laid out exhibits dealing with the area’s shipping industry and the importance of the Great Lakes to the region. Plenty of ship models on display everything from small tugs and sailboats to the large lake freighters. Our tour was a big group with almost 20 people though it didn’t feel insanely cramped. Definitely a sobering thought that sailers in the navy were on the submarine for weeks at a time with four times as many people on board as our tour group. We got to see the big SS Badger car ferry come into town from Michigan which was neat since it’s the only surviving coal powered passenger ferry in the Great Lakes. The gift shop was reasonable and was able to get a hoodie for 30 dollars. Give yourself 2 hours on top of the submarine tour to fully enjoy the museum.

This was our third tour at this site. The two previous experiences were excellent. Today 6 additional people were allowed to join the group, making conditions very crowded and awkward. A school group arrived shortly after our appointed time, and our guide was repeatedly told to hurry. Consequently much of the regular information was not imparted to our group. The guide was unable to answer questions from the group.
