Friends introduced us to this well kept park. We hope to stop back again and also check out the museum nearby.

Very much dependent on visitors expectations. Those interested in accepted history will find the site long in generality and theory, little in evidence. Educational markers decayed or vandalized. Disappointing. The average visitor will find little more than a lumpy field with restrooms and a nice picnic area with a safe decent tasting well. Enjoyable short and easy nature walk looking... The location along the Crawfish River in Jefferson County WI has fortunately been preserved to protect the archeological earthworks. There are platform mounds and conical mounds at this site. There is evidence that is related to the Cahokia site.

Every school student in Wisconsin should be required to visit Aztalan State park and learn about the Misissippian culture that inhabited Wisconsin. It's an amazing place and so interesting - sure to spellbind any visitor. Learn about its connections with Cahokia in Illinois and you'll really be amazed! Visit in the early morning or late afternoon for best photographs of... More

I took a group of German foreign exchange students to visit in mid-October. The Indian settlers who were here have been gone since about 1200 AD. But the burial mounds and replica fortress wall give the feelings of awe and trepidation. Rarely have I been so inspired by any historical site this close to home. You can easily spend an... More

Beautiful park and grounds. Museum somewhat disorganized, and there are items here that have little to do with the Native American history. A volunteer told me that documentation for many of the items had been lost over the years. There are plans to build an interpretive center here, which might improve the experience. The historical information available at the site... More

The park is quite large, with some real history. Indian Mounds and a Indian settlement to learn about. There are park rangers there sometimes and a small history museum with some very knowledgeable staff. The only thing to remember is that if you park there and leave your car without paying for park fees, you will get a ticket, so... More

Aztalan is an amazing historic site! There are hands on activities for children at the museum. For kids and families of all ages, there are beautiful, well-maintained trails for hiking among the rolling hills and near the Native American sacred burial mounds and former residential sites. The Native American and early Wisconsin state history are rich and well explained by... More

Sunday is the day to visit this fascinating archeological site and take the walking tour. Bob Birmingham (UW-Waukesha) gives an interpretive lecture and leads a lively discussion of this Mississippian and Woodland tribal town, currently under excavation for research and study. Effigy mounds abound. Much information about the stockade wall and other features of this site give clues to its... More
