The historical museum was very nice and well done with an emphasis on the Ojibwe, who were the first people to settle in the area. The staff were kind and ready to answer questions. The original museum was near the back of the new structure and offered a glimpse of the what the museum was like when first opened- very meta.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 June 2024
- June S12 contributionsA day on Madeline IslandLa Pointe is a quaint little town on Madeline Island...reminds me of Door County. Rented bikes and rode out to Big Bay State Park. Two things you must do there: Stop at the Wisconsin Overlook on Point trail and go to Barrier Beach and experience Lake Superior. They also have a beautiful boardwalk trail by the beach. We also walked Capser trail...a one mile trail through the woods in town. Ate at the Beach Club...outdoor seating. The fish tacos were excellent!Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 August 2024
- Middleoftheroad52,675 contributionsVisit For the State ParkThe ferry ride, while spendy, was quick, scenic and efficient. The workers were friendly and good at what they did. There’s really not much in the town of La Pointe. There was a bus load of senior citizens on the ferry with me, and I can’t imagine what they found to do on the island. I would only visit if you are capable of hiking in Big Bay State Park. The Point and Bay View Trails are stunning. They are pretty level, so anyone in average physical condition should be able to handle them. You don’t have to do any rock scrambling or steep inclines. Take your vehicle on the ferry, because the state park is 6-7 miles from the dock. I would also pack a sack lunch, hand sanitizer and trash bags. The park does not have flush toilets (maybe in the campground???) or trash cans. It’s too inconvenient to leave the park to go eat in town and then come back. Pick up both an island and a park map from the kiosk on the mainland. Fuel your vehicle before leaving the mainland. There were signs posted about no fuel (for the time being) on the island. Have a credit card if you need a day pass for the park. The pay station is not always manned.Visited October 2024Travelled soloWritten 1 October 2024

I do not recommend making the trip over to the island unless you are going to maybe ride bikes all over the island or maybe find a small beach to spend the day at. Everything is not open as advertised and as quoted on all of the poor review responses. We spent the $90 to make the trip over and only a candle store, small tourist shop with Chinese merchandise, a food truck and one restaurant for pick up only .... were open.
Now the island itself is more of a residential environment and the locals really do not want you to visit the island. There is a state park on the island for camping, but if u camp, make sure you have absolutely everything u need to survive while on the island, because u will not find it on the island.
My opinion, areas are very nice, but does live up to the hype.
The ferry charges for the car and for each person in the car.
If u read this give me a helpful vote.

Meh.
The ferry trip of only 2.6 miles is quick and easy and with a car and 4 of us cost just $91 dollars....
Once on the lovely island of Madeline, we quickly skipped town to savor the mansions tour (ticket seller told us to go for the home tour). There’s none. We drove the entire island and saw very little to no homes even through the trees. Where are they mansions and home tours, sir?
We decided that perhaps we were just lost with our one road map and headed in to town. Parking was easy with ample spaces near the baseball fields. The online map and map we picked up at the ferry station promised lots of shops, eateries and more...
Perhaps COVID has taken a toll on this little community since the only restaurant we could find that was open ONLY did online orders to be picked up. All the promising listed stores And exciting sites to be seen were, lost somewhere on Madeline.
The $91 was not worth the trip for 60 minutes, but we saw that the camping was a must, as they were full!

Knock, knock. Any body home? Yep, took the $60 round trip ferry to Madeline Island only to find almost everything was closed or had a limited opening including restaurants. Big Bay Park was also closed unless you made a reservation. WTH, how was I suppose to know this place was essentially shut down. Where were the notices in Bayfield telling folks that Covid-19 restrictions had closed the island. Why didn't the ferry operator tell people it was not open for business. Bad public relations. So happy Bayfield was open and welcoming visitors.

We traveled here before Memorial Day so things were quiet. Since we had a car we were able to see a good portion of the island. We walked the beach looking for agates, hiked the trails in Big Bay State Park, visited the Indian Cemetery, had ice cream, enjoyed the 80 degree weather, picnicked over looking Lake Superior. Museum was closed so that is why we gave it a very good.

This is an Island that you shouldn't come to if you want to go shopping, out to eat or visit with friendly locals, all of these are extremely limited. If you want to come & enjoy the beaches, a few hidden jems if you can hike down steep trails through the woods & bring everything you need, including food for a good stay...then I recommend it! I stopped spending money on this Island after I realized the locals don't like tourists. So now I stealth camp & head to the beaches hardest to get to, just to avoid them. It's a beautiful Island, don't let the locals ruin it for you.

We took our vehicle over on the ferry so we could see all of Madeline Island. The ferry was a unique experience, though pricey at $64 for two of us with our car. We were somewhat disappointed as there wasn’t a whole lot to see over there. The state park was beautiful with an awesome beach, but that was about all that impressed us. The shoreline is hidden from the roads around most of the island, as you drive mostly through woods. There were very few stores to browse near the ferry landing. We saw several people on mopeds that had been rented, but that didn’t look too impressive either. We can find equally beautiful beaches elsewhere without paying the price of the ferry. We can say we’ve been there!

The largest and most "commercial" of the Apostle Islands, Madeline Island is a nice day trip or suitable for an extended stay for those looking for peace and quiet. Cycling, boating, kayaking, hiking, swimming for those with a thick skin, and camping are the kinds of things to do. The island community is an eclectic mix of nice year around homes and campers slowly blending into the woods. Aside from the small village of La Pointe, it feels largely undeveloped. There are several restaurants, all of which kind of blend into the burger, fish tacos, and pizza genre. The little convenience store has some basics, but it you plan to stay for a few days, bring your own groceries. Stuff is expensive and the place was closed all four days we were there. If Wisconsin Dells is your idea of a 10, this place is a zero or 1. If you want a quiet getaway with terrible cell phone service, this is the one.

This is a great day trip. There are restaurant options, art galleries and if you are staying on the island, there appears to be great places for music in the evenings. There are parks with spectacular sandy beaches and coves. There are also lodging and camping options. We were staying in Bayfield and took the ferry for the better part of a day. Take your car on the ferry if you want to drive the island. You can rent bikes and scooters once you arrive, if you are so inclined.

We were riding in the designated bike lane and hugging the edge towards the ditch and were afraid of being run down by the residents who apparently did not like us bicycling on the side of the highway. One white truck came right up behind us on the side of the road before turning into their house and another woman yelled at us to get off the road! We really got the feeling that they do not like tourists. The local Beach bar charged us over $24 dollars for a hamburger. They charge you extra for every little thing that should just go on a burger. Rip off.

1st, in order to build bike paths that suit your satifsfaction, permission needs to be obtained from landowners, which is not always possible. The paths go out as far as possible on the road area that is owned by the town of La Pointe. Perhaps you should ask about our zoning laws before you criticize. Also, you complained that the beach wasn't wide enough for you....UM....that's because the water levels are at a record HIGH. Sorry we didn't think to drain a little out of the lake before you got here. Also, thanks for your cut-and paste "history lesson" about a place you've only visited once, but the reason Madeline is still inhabited is because (and you left this part out, probably because you didn't KNOW) the island has been inhabited since the 1600s. It was once a major fur trading center. And last....I'm not sure what you meant that you thought the island would be more "upscale", but if you were expecting Club Med, then perhaps that's where you should have gone.

We were thinking of taking the ferry over for just a day trip in mid-September- are the restaurants and shops within walking distance from the ferry’s?
Written 23 July 2018
Yes, there are shops and restaurants available within walking distance. Mid-September, you may find that not all businesses are open during certain days of the week. It is important to check the Madeline Island Chamber of Commerce website to check open hours. You will also likely find the moped and bicycle shop open, as well as the boat charter and kayak tour companies open during this time of year.*
*Depending on weather.

Someone told me there are a lot of Victorian era homes there and also tours of them. Is this true?
Written 5 September 2017
We are going to point you towards Bayfield, Wisconsin- just across the Bay. Bayfield is a quaint town with an assortment of Victorian style homes, specifically the Rittenhouse, which is an historic B&B and restaurant. Contact their Visitor Bureau for tour information.
Over on Madeline Island, we have historic cabins and cottages. Nebraska Row is known for its mansion sized cabins along the lakeshore, walking distance from town. We do no provide tours of these. But there is a lovely self-guided walking tour of the island. You can pick up information at the Chamber of Commerce, walking distance from the ferry.

Hours vary greatly- depending on the weather and visitor traffic. But generally...
-Beach Club is open year-round, daily 11- close
- Call restaurants for hours, most will be open weekends, and with limited weekly hours
-Shopping, most shops and galleries will be open Thur-Sun. Some may be open all week. Sundays are another day where business may or may not be open.
-Grocery, Lori's Store will be be open for provisions, liquor, beer, and wine, but it is recommended to bring over the foods you think you will need
-Mission Hill Coffee Shop is open year-round, you can also get provisions here
-MI Bakery is usually open on the weekends
-Gasoline, Superior Petrol is open M,W 10-2, otherwise you can get gasoline daily at the Marina
- All parks and public areas remain open
- Madeline Island Historical Preservation Association should be open on weekends and possibly later in the week.
-Water excursions still do trips this late into the year, so plan ahead if interested.
In summary,
- during the week shops and galleries hours vary greatly
- come prepared with everything you think you may need
- limited provisions are available
- buy gasoline in Bayfield and come with a full tank of gas
- expect less going on, expect to spend time outside (this is the locals favorite time of year). With that said, bring extra layers, rubber boots- just in case. It's cooler by the lake- always.
Hope this helps,
Madeline Island

What will be open in October(22nd)? I get the feeling this is a bit late to be going.
Written 5 July 2017
October 21 is our annual Family Fall Fest, so Saturday will be bustling with most businesses open and plenty of activities for children. Check our website for more information on the event. Aside from Fall Fest, the end of October is slow but our peak fall color is the third week in October so it's definitely worth visiting. "Smotator" is correct in bringing provisions over with you and fueling up with gasoline before heading over. There is gasoline at the marina and they are open daily and the main pump in town is open Monday and Wednesday from 10-2. We have several restaurants that remain open - the Beach Club is open for lunch and dinner. Cafe Seiche is a farm-to-table serving dinner Fri-Sat and brunch on Sundays (their hours vary). Farmhouse is an excellent choice (Thur-Sun) for breakfast or brunch. We do have a convenience store that will be open and Mission Hill Coffee Shop has quality and the necessary provisions if you may have forgotten something. In the end... it's much quieter, things close down, but some remain open, and we will always make sure you have what you need to be comfortable on our island. Come over!

We have 2 toddlers, so we will be bringing a double stroller. What can we do in our situation? Any trails that we can still go on? Would like to go to a beach or the caves.
Written 14 June 2017
Madeline Island is very accessible for strollers as well as wheelchairs.
-Big Bay Town Park* and Big Bay State Park** are connected by a boardwalk with interpretive signs that will allow for a stroller. The easiest entry for a stroller is at the State Park (picnic area). There is a winding ramp that connects to the boardwalk along the beach.
*Beautiful beach, lagoon with canoe rental, water access, boardwalk connected to State Park with observations decks, large set of stairs to go down and may be difficult to carry double stroller.
**Beautiful beach, accessible boardwalk access, sea caves shortly off of parking lot, wood chipped/gravel trail to sea caves
-Capser Trail outside of town is a wood chipped/gravel trail that is flat, depending on your stroller you may be able to use it there.
-the Town of La Pointe (where the ferry lands and shops and restaurants are) is accessible and walkable for a stroller.
