I parked at the riverfront park in Star City where they got the JFK memorial. That little statue of John John is awesome. Whatever, I was just going to check-out the river trail and get some exercise in - saw this place on Google Maps and made some loops around the trails. You know it's the wrong time of year and all - the trees look dry and bare. It wasn't cold out but it did look the part. Seems like these are nice trails that hug some rocky cliffs They are maintained well, well marked and steep at points. The arboretum people I guess at the university do a superb job in building and labeling everything. Really a great educational experience in learning the different trees and plants if you want to read everything and look things up. I was in the bamboo patch they got and that made me the happiest. Yea, bamboo always makes me feel more attached to nature for some reason. I just like being around it. Si suggested that I should listen the "symphony" of the bamboo.

This is a beautiful place to experience nature in the city of Morgantown on the campus of West Virginia University. It is located just aside the Stadium. There is no admission charge. Parking is limited. The lot is small at the main entrance but we have never seen it completely full.. Bring your own water as there is none available and no rest room facilities. No picnic facilities. There are multiple hiking trails of easy to moderate difficulty. At the bottom of the hill. Most trails connect to the Monagahela River Rail Trail which at its eastern terminus connects to hotels, restaurants, bars and a parking garage. The most scenic trail in the Arboretum is the Cliffside Trail with beautiful rock formations and growths of rhododendron and mountain laurel. Don’t miss the paw paw trees in the parking area when you return to your car. Two hours here can give you an unrushed experience. Three hours are ideal if you want to explore more than one or two trails.

Visited my daughter at WVU. It was nice to spend the afternoon hiking around in the peaceful setting. I like how there are several elevations and how it passes along the river.

I've been to the Core Arboretum in spring, summer, and fall and it needs some work. There are a few nice areas right at the entrance but the trails are very raw and not much work has been done cultivating sites within the trail system. Good for a hike or walk but don't expect too much in the area of tree identification or forest grooming. Even during peak season, leaves a lot to be desired.

We visited in early June and found that all the flowering vegetation had past and everything was just green. Even with vegetation markers it was hard to distinguish the individual plants from one and another and just gave up and enjoyed the walk in the forest.
The arboretum is located in town and across from the main entrance to WVU and adjacent to the stadium and will find a small free parking lot at the entrance. Be sure to pick up a map at the entrance to identify the indigenous plants and intertwining trails. Don’t expect the area and trails to be level and trails over flat ground, except for a small grassy area located near the beginning of the trail heads. You heart rate will definitely elevate over some areas and would not be easy for anyone with severe physical challenges. There is a service road and is used by walkers and bicyclists, but what I saw there wasn’t much tree coverage to protect you from the sun and stayed under tree cover. Allow 1-2 hours to enjoy a nice walk in the forest without having to leave town.

I didn't feel like sitting in a dorm room all day while it was so nice outside. I walked across campus and entered the WVU Arboretum. There were lots of brochures about the trails, flora, and birds at the entrance to the Arboretum. If you were expecting a well manicured park with many marked trees, then this is not for you. If you wanted a walk in the forest with some steep trails (as well as flat), then this place is perfect. There are trees that are marked as well as interesting native plants and local geology. I found this place invigorating and relaxing at the same time. You can also see the Monongahela River from the Granville Island Trail and Silver Oak Trail. It took about an hour to walk the perimeter trails of the Arboretum.

Arboretum's I have seen in the past are botanical gardens created to include a collection of a wide range of plants labelled with their botanical names, with paved walkways and a good amount of open space. This area between Monongahela Blvd and the Monongahela River is a natural woodland with a dense growth of trees, shrubs, and grasses, with a few paths cut through it. We saw only of handful of labels. There's a significant loss of elevation from the entrance to the river, so if you descend, be aware you will have a mountain climbing experience returning to your car.

We picnicked on a bench, then hiked the full trail down along the Monongahela River. We really appreciated that many of the trees/plants were labelled and also the signs about local geology and history! Don't miss this area if you enjoy walking.

Such a wonderful treasure in Morgantown. If you love to walk in nature then you will love this place. It can be an intense workout though so make sure you wear the right shoes. The hike down is wonderful but the hike back up can be hard. But there are benches to rest at in wonderful locations so you can take it all in. There are lots of different trails to take depending on what you are interested in.
