Nice little gift shop. Good selection of WV items. Also has extensive collection of WV travel brochures and information. Friendly staff. Spent time there while waiting for our train to depart.

Excellent facility to visit and learn about the railroading of the area. Beautiful gift shop, clean restrooms. The two museums are worth a walk to from the depot. Lots of parking and shops with gifts and ice cream and eats nearby. Volunteers keep the place going and are very welcoming.

We stopped here this morning on our way to Green Bank looking for some suggestions for stops and routes. Anne Beardslee was super helpful. This is a great resource and totally on-mission. Make sure to stop here!

We were looking for museums that were open on a January Saturday, so we stopped into the Visitors Center. The volunteer working that day was very courteous and knowledgeable, and we had a nice chat about Elkins history. We were disappointed to find that the museums we wanted to see-the railroad museum and the forestry museum were both closed. The volunteer did suggest other sites of interest, and was very helpful.

Train ride was nice. Good commentary, Lunch not so much. Stale bun, room temperature meats and cheese. pasta salad was pasta with Itialian dressing. I would advise getting a lunch somewhere else and bring it on the train.

The train station is a historical and functioning one and home to the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad. We took the CHEAT MOUNTAIN SALAMANDER tour. It's a 120 miles, eight hour round trip. A included free lunch buffet as was beverages. We went on opening day and we were happy we did. We spent two night, a laid back trip. If you like nature, history and trains, DO IT!

We didn't spend a lot of time here either before or after the train ride. It was crowded and busy and seemed to have everything you look for in a welcome center...helpful people, lots of pamphlets and clean rest rooms. The gift shop had the usual assortment of branded merchandise, postcards and other items.

Online ticket purchase was very easy so we had our "tickets" when we got there. Still had to check in, however, so they knew we were there. Everyone in the Welcome Center was very nice and very helpful. And there were bathrooms there, which was good. We were in the "T" car so we had to get on in another car and go through approximately 3 additional cars before getting to ours. Some of the passage ways were a little narrow so if you have any limitations, you may wish to speak to someone before purchasing your tickets to ensure that the car you step up and into is, indeed, your car. We had a very noisy car. Every seat was filled and everyone was busy chattering away making any announcements made by the train personnel at times a little difficult to hear. The ride was beautiful. The scenery was simply gorgeous and we had a very clear day. I also think we were seated on the correct side of the car and saw more than those seated across the aisle (and that would be you want to sit on the LEFT side of the car if the engine is in front of you and you're facing forward.) 4 people to a table, and our sandwich buffet occurred within about the first 30 minutes of the ride. Lunch was okay -- a bun, lunchmeat (ham, turkey & roastbeef); lettuce, tomato & onion to put on your sandwich; a choice of American or Swiss cheese; and packets of mustard/mayo. You also get pasta salad, a bag of chips, and a drink of either pink lemonade, water, or Coke. It's a lot to carry -- gratefully, they provided bags for your chips, utensils, napkins, etc. Our train expert on our car was Mary and she was very good, pointing out things on the loud speaker as we approached them. Again, whether or not you'll hear her will depend on the others on the train. On our way to the falls (which is where you go before heading back down the mountain) we had a rather abrupt stop and were told there was a tree down across the tracks that would have to be removed. It took approximately 40 minutes to accomplish this but we were soon on our way again. Thank heavens the cars are air conditioned. And there are also bathrooms on the train cars. Once at the falls, you're given approximately 30 minutes to see and take pictures. You're summoned back to the train when you hear the train's loud whistle. On the return, you're treated to individually wrapped cookies and there is coffee if you so desire. The return ride seems to be much shorter than the outbound ride -- probably because we had the tree in our path. I would most certainly recommend this excursion and hope to do it again one day.

Thank you so much for your comments about the Elkins Depot Welcome Center and the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad. The Welcome Center is only connected to the Railroad by location, but I will be happy to pass on your comments about the train ride. I am glad that even with the unexpected down tree you had a good trip. We enjoy our time with our guests and taking time to help you. I hope you will return to Elkins again in the future.

We are heading to D&E for a college tour. Wanted to know what are the best sites to see in the town of Elkins? Also the train ride, how long is it, is there more than one destination on the train ride? Thank you

The Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad offers two trips that leave from the Elkins Depot Welcome Center. There is a 4 hour and an 8 1/2 hour train ride.
The 4 hour New Tygart Flyer departs at 11:00 am and travels to the High Falls of Cheat. You have a lunch buffet on board and a stop at the falls long enough to get off and explore . It returns to Elkins at 3:00 pm. The train currently runs Thursday through Sunday.
The 8 1/2 hour Mountain Salamander leaves at 9:30 am, includes a lunch and a stop at the High Falls. It continues past the falls up to the old site of the town of Spruce on Bald Knob.
It returns to Elkins about 6:00 pm. This train currently runs Friday through Sunday.
The Railroad also offers trains that leave from the Cass and Durbin depots. You can get more information about the trains by calling 304-636-9477. We recommend reservations in advance if possible.
Hope this is helpful!
