Stopped at Fairfax Stone Historical Monument on a whim. It's an interesting bit of history if you have time. A little time consuming to get to and "off the beaten path". I wouldn't suggest ladies traveling alone risk the secluded area. I tiny dribble of a spring is reported to be the "head spring of the Potomac River". (OK, if... More

My wife and I went with our 5 month old when we were headed to Maryland after leaving Blackwater Falls and I saw the sign for the attraction, we just had to see what it was about. From when you first saw the sign for the attraction, it was maybe about another 5 mile drive and then you come to... More

The Fairfax Stone is two miles off route 219. The road is narrow but paved and in decent condition. However, i was a little concerned when I drove a half mile and then faced a right turn at a sign directing me to the "Fairfax Stone two miles." Had it moved? Was the distance measured wrong from the highway or... More

Not very exciting to see even if your a history buff. It's a rock with a plaque, and a small stone marker. Small picnic place but no hiking trails. Our thoughts were "that's it?"

The Fairfax Stone was a bit underwhelming. The site consisted of the stone, a parking area, a few picnic tables and the headwaters of the Potomac River. It is cool to see once, but there is no need to go again.

Took the short drive off of Route 219 to vbisit this historical location. I had known that it marked the surveying of the land for Lord Fairfax but I had not previously known that the spring by the stone is the headwaters for the Potomac River. There is just the spring, the stone, and one picnic table, but it was... More

It's just a neat place to visit because it's the headwaters of the Potomac River and there's some history behind it, which you can read on the stone. Also, you could have a picnic at the tables there if you'd prefer.

The stone [a replica of one that had been vandalized] is just that - a stone marker. What is significant is that is marks the headwaters of one of the branches of the Potomac. That's all, but to us it was worth the drive to see the stone. Don't expected a lot [we didn't]
