I have intended for decades to take this train ride and was delighted to get reservations for an October weekend trip. I was disappointed. First, the fall colors were practically non-existant. Second, the trip took 5 hours with several stops for water, to let other...More

We had a group ride from Durbin, VA on a 2 hour Steam Train ride. The scenery was fantastic with the fall colors. We had a short stop at the top to explore and closer look at the train. We also picked up two overnight...More

The town of Cass is really cool because it still has company houses and a company store. The history is very interesting as well. I took the four and a half hour train ride to Bald Knob. It was quite exciting at first but the...More

What a stunning 2 hour (shorter) ride with 2 switches. Our world is beautiful. Recommend taking a jacket as it gets cooler at the top. Take the time to walk around while there. On the return stop in the shop and small museum.

We rode the train to Whitaker Station. It was really interesting with the two switchback tracks. It was a gorgeous day and the views were beautiful.

Highly recommend this park if you want solitude, and a chance to unwind and enjoy nature. There is NO cell phone service, but there is wi-fi. Everyone was extremely friendly, and the trails were easy to navigate. The steam engine train ride is a must-do.

Took the 5 hour excursion to Bald Knob on the old logging railroad. Knowledgeable staff narrated the entire ride - learned much about the Shay engines (think all-wheel drive steam locomotive!) and the logging operations in the past. Went on a Thursday, train wasn't crowded...More

Whenever we travel, if there is a train ride nearby, we book it! This was a lovely trip from Cass, up to Whittaker Station. Upon reflection, we should have booked the four hour trip, up to the top. Enjoyed the trip and looking at the...More

My husband looked forward to this trip from Cass to Bald Knob for years. It was better than he hoped it would be. I really enjoyed it, too, although I'm not the train buff he is. The conductor/narrator, Josh, was excellent, talking about the Shay...More

We were told not to move from car to car. Our third car had a restroom. Ask in the station before you board. The staff was very friendly and will accommodate you if they understand the need.

Quite a bit of food. Ham, turkey and cheese and a roll. You make it. Chips, pasta salad, apple sauce and cookies. Water.
