The show presents a history of Japanese immigration to Washington, the laws restricting Asian immigration and rights and the incarceration of Japanese Americans in WWII. The quote from Gordon Hirabayashi on the constant vigilance required to preserve the Constitution seems very timely, as do the oral history quotes, stories and photos of those incarcerated who lost homes, businesses and family... I have been to the Museum a number of times and each time I feel as though I am learning more about the state of Washington and its history. The new exhibits focus on different issues and cultures that make up the history of the the state. It is a welcoming place with a great gift shop that acts as... More

i don't usually use all caps and exclamation points in my reviews but this one deserves it. we had an hour to kill in Tacoma before we headed back home to Seattle to kick out our house sitter. Well, after three hours, we realized that we needed to actually move along. We're long time residents of Washington state (ok, forever... More

We had an excellent visit to this small to medium size museum. Perfect for a rainy day. With children you can do the museum in about 2 to 3 hours. Parking next to the building in a pay lot. Model train exhibit for kids

My daughter and I took advantage of free the third Thursday program at the Tacoma museums and so glad we did! Just a heads up, most museums only offer the free portion during the 5p -8p time frame, but this one starts at 2p and runs too 8p. Wish we world have known that, as there's lots to see and... More

The history museum offers visitors a well-rounded education in the story of Washington, from the days of Native American culture predominating, to the days of the pioneers, as well as exhibits on the role of Boeing, the salmon fisheries and canneries, coal-mining and hydroelectric power for the region. And there is often a musical group performing on a floor above.... More

My wife and I went to the museum for their annual Model Railroad event. As usual, there were miles of smiles on the faces of the children of all ages who were visiting this excellent, annual holiday event. We went between Christmas and New Years Day in hopes that the crowds would be smaller...we chose well. We were able to... More

We took our 9 and 12 year old grandsons to see the model train displays. We all loved it. The boys enjoyed the other museum exhibits as well. There were some hands-on things for them, but a lot of the exhibits involved reading and/or watching videos. Unfortunately it was hard for them to take the time to do so. We... More

Plenty of pay parking. The interior of the building is architecturally stunning! Tons of exhibits regarding Washington history. Handicap accessible, clean bathrooms! Small gift shop available. Staff are very friendly. This was an eye opener for us! Plan a few hours to visit.
