Park is open 10am to dusk, and paved road takes you by one trailhead pullout and a large parking area at the top of the mountain. Some trails are for hikers only, some are multi purpose and well maintained for jogging and mountain bike enjoyment. Trails are well marked but would suggest downloading and carrying a map and chart of individual trail difficulties, which range from easy to difficult. (Can be found at the Mount Vernon Trail Builders website.) Some of the hiker only trails can be steep and you might want a walking stick for some traction. Highlights were the 2 overlooks at the top of the mountain and the rusted out, wrecked 30's era car on the Julieann trail. Locals say the car was used in getaway from a robbery when it crashed. The safe was ejected from the wreck and can be found about 100' down the bank from the car. Parking lot area at the top of mountain has picnic tables and a very basic restroom (pit), no running water.

This little gem is right down the road from us and is great for locals or out of towner! You can either drive right up to the top to enjoy one of many viewpoints or go on several little hikes around or up the mountain! Great to enjoy a sunset on a clear night!

You can drive up to the top of the viewpoint or park your car at different trailhead and hike up the mountain. This is one of the great place to view the skagit valley. Trail sign is pretty clear, some parts of trails are pretty steep (Ginny trail .. I guess that's the name). But very rewarding once you arrive the top. There are 2 viewpoints (I prefer the Pickering Viewpoint more). Overall is very pleasant. If you decided to do the hiking, highly recommend you or your group access the restroom even before driving to the trailhead. The restroom .. use it only if you really need to go (wink).

A great place for a walk if you want some elevation change. You will share most trails with the mountain bikes, but most are decent folks. Only a few idiots who expect you to sprout wings and magically get out of their way.
Warning though that their has been a big rash of car break-ins on the mountain. City of MV doesn't seem too concerned and there are no routine police patrols.

Road to the top opens around 10:00 a.m. Great view and picnic area on top. If you are there before 10, just park on the side and walk around the gate for some great hiking and mt biking. I go up in the winter time to mt bike because there is such good drainage that I'm not a muddy mess when I get back to the car. The trail builders have done a great job.

Although the name does not sound very interesting, Little Mountain is a great place to visit on a clear day! Located just a short drive away from downtown Mount Vernon, the park offers two look-outs, numerous hiking trails of varying difficulty, and a few picnicking areas.
There is a lookout at the very top of the hill, and a newer lookout a little further down the road. Both offer incredible views of Mount Vernon, the San Juan Islands, the Olympic Mountains, and Mount Baker. There is a limited number of parking spaces at the lookouts, so be prepared to wait for a spot or do some additional walking.
The trails are narrow dirt ones that weave through the trees, but they are peaceful and manageable. A map at each trailhead lists the trails and their difficulty level, and signs are located along the trail to point you in the right direction. There is a “nature trail” that includes signs pointing out different species of trees, ferns, and bushes that makes for an easy, informative hike.
Little Mountain is a great destination on a sunny day, perfect for families, couples, and friends. If you’re ever in Mount Vernon, a visit to Little Mountain is a must!

Use the many trails to get some good hiking exercise or drive to the top and visit the lookouts...either way, all come to the fantastic viewpoints where you can see all of Mount Vernon! It's a beautiful place to see the North or West sides of the city, take your Senior/Family photos or even propose to your loved one!

Two view locations at the top of Little Mountain within the city of Mount Vernon. The lookout tower at the top is a great place to see the local Skagit Flats and mountains from a moderate elevation. Views from the top are to the West and South of the farm land and Skagit River. From the observation platform at a lower elevation resting on the edge of the mountain, look to the North and East for views of Mount Vernon, Skagit River and the mountains. On a clear day Mount Baker is visible in the background. A small amount of walking is necessary to access both locations. On a clear day bring your camera.

I'm a local so I'd don't view this park as a tourist. I take my dogs there frequently and it's wooded trails are beautiful. You can hike to the top (approximately 1.5 miles) and the valley views and sunsets are gorgeous. There are dozens of trail for walkers and mountain bikes. I have two large, well behaved dogs, and people are way more kicked back about off leash dogs than on city trails. You are 5 minutes from downtown, but you feel like you're in the boons. Some trails are more heavily traveled than others, so you can be as alone as you want. You can drive to the top to and enjoy the picnic tables and enjoy the views without having to walk at all. Plenty of parking. I go with friends, or solo and have been going for years. Due to the wonderful volunteers, there are more trails and they're beautifully kept up.

I hesitate to recommend this park because there usually are not many people here. If you live locally and have never been here, you are really missing out. Besides the fantastic views there are many great trails for most skill levels.

Hello!
We will be in Mt Vernon for a few days in August for a wedding. We'd like to check out a trail with great views. I've read the reviews, but no specific trail names are mentioned. Which trails are know for the best vistas?

Is this park open now after COVID? We would arrive about 9:30 from our ferry. The website says it doesn’t open until 10. Is there anything nearby we could do for half an hour?
