Located between downtown Winchester and Jim Barnett Park, Shawnee Springs Preserve protects a small area (14 acres) of springs, wetlands and forests. It's by no means pristine: English ivy overwhelms many of the trees, and the concrete foundation of Winchester's old water works are still present. However, it offers an unpaved footpath through a shady forest and the paved Winchester Green Circle Trail beside Town Run. Places along the wooded "healing trail" encourage you to exercise, meditate and commune with nature. It is the site of part of the Sheridan Field Hospital - the largest Union field hospital during the Civil War. An urban setting that has long been neglected, Shawnee Springs Preserve now invites visitors to explore nature next to downtown Winchester. Look for the good-sized chinquapin oaks, hear the birds, and listen for the bubbling springs. This was Winchester's first municipal water source.

This is a great nature preserve created from a golf course conversion. Paved pathways along the river and through the hills and cleared grass paths to hidden benches make for an easy hike that is kid and animal friendly. Nature abounds with flowers, great plantings, bald eagles and other birds, butterflies and more. There is an outdoor pavilion so you can bring your picnic and a large gravel parking lot. Put it on your list for a visit. It is one of my favorite places to visit. And, when you are done there are a few wineries close by and the Appalachian Trail if you wan more hiking.

Very much enjoyed walking the path in this area. It's an easy walk with lots of areas to stop and rest if needed. Saw many species of birds. Quiet, peaceful, relaxing. Heavily wooded park in the middle of the city.

This short little trail was a nice way to start my visit to Winchester. The trail is not very long and goes through field and forest. It is bordered on two sides by the Green Circle trail and throughout the whole walk there are little cleared area to do Yoga and meditation. The trail needs to add a few trash cans to help with the litter issue and the old waterwork foundations need some type of drainage to deal with the algae filled stagnant water. Overall not a bad walk.

The previous reviews sounded pleasant so we stopped by for a short Sunday morning walk. First thing we noticed was piles of trash at the entrance, including blankets, sleeping bags & liquor bottles. Then along the trail, lots more trash. And people lurking in the woods. And evidence of drug use. Yikes. We saw at least one tent back in the woods. There are obviously homeless people living in there despite signs stating no “camping” in the park. We did not feel safe & quickly exited & walked back on the street. A shame, sounds like it used to be a nice place, not anymore.

OMG- The best pies ever. Try the Fruits of the Forest, Lemon Crunch, Blackberry, Brown Betty's Apple Pies. The blueberry syrup and jellies were a hit with my Brother-in-law's mother. She loved the product. Shipping is available for some of the products. Unfortunately not on the pies.
