Abrams Creek Wetlands Preserve
The wetlands preserve is a unique 60-acre track of marshes and swamps that are home to over 300 species of plants and two distinct habitat types. 20 of these species are listed as “rare” in Virginia. The City of Winchester has done an excellent job of protecting this resources while allowing public access.
Open from dawn until dusk public access is a one-mile metal “boardwalk” trail with some interpretive signs and markers. Access is free.
Access to the trail is from Winchester’s Green Circle Trail. There is no parking but visitors may use the parking lot of the Abrams Crossing Shopping Center parking lot at 621 West Jubal Early Drive. From the parking lot turn left and walk about 150 meters and the entrance is well marked on your left.
The Wetlands are unique and well worth exploring while in the area. The Wetlands are also the subject of a two-decade long study by two Shenandoah University professors from the Environmental Studies Department. The study is scheduled for publication in Castanea: Journal of the Southern Appalachian Botanical Society.

Have visited this wetlands walk on every visit to Winchester. The surface is smooth pavement with one wooden bridge. Path runs thru wetlands, then beside old railroad track, and then behind some homes in nice neighborhood. Not very long but a nice place for a walk if you are in town and need to stretch your legs. Depending on when you walk, you can also grab a cup of coffee at The Daily Grind if you park in the shopping center on Jubal Early drive.

This is a lovely, paved path to walk around the wetlands preserve. Look, but don't touch the wildlife and plants. We enjoyed it and even found it to be romantic!

I've biked and ran along this trail, easily accessible from the nearby strip-mall. Easy to see a variety of wildlife here, including birds, small mammals and the occasional black snake. And the firefly show in the summer is unforgettable.

This is a lovely little walk. While the views aren't anything extraordinary and the end point may be a let down the first time, meandering through the wetlands, along the railroad tracks, and behind a quiet neighborhood has a charm to it. If you go when the honeysuckles are in bloom, you will be gifted with the sweet scent throughout most of your walk. There isn't really any canopy, so bring a hat and sunglasses on a sunny day.

This is a well attended path right in the thick of things in Winchester. (ok, a few blocks out). We walked along and we loved the list of birds that people have seen! We loved the wetlands...but wished it would have had more shade! We will walk the path again!

This natural area offers an easy, flat mile-long walk or bicycle ride. A paved path crossed wetlands where over 180 bird species have been sighted, and where more than 15 plants on Virginia's Rare Plants List live. Watch for green herons, great blue herons, tree swallows, kingfishers, red-winged blackbirds, muskrats, painted turtles and other marsh residents. Not a challenging hike, but a great place to stroll with friends or as a family, esp. with small children. Can be hot on sunny days.

Nice walking path through a preserve. Lots of ducks and birds, much of it skirts an upscale housing development

So the path runs along the road after you park at a shopping center. It is a nice level paved path. Downside is it really doesn’t go near the water. There was a brief boardwalk bridge, but mostly some wildflowers, brush and the backs of houses. If it hadn’t been called a wetlands preserve I probably would have rated it higher as just a hike and bike trail.

We like to ride our bike slowly through the wetlands. We find it very pleasant and relaxing. However, the are many, many places where roots are pushing through the asphalt. Not only is this very bumpy, but could be a trip hazard to walkers.
