This place is really "old school." The woodwork and the lighting fixtures are works are art, and the ceiling in the rotonda is amazing. This library was created before lots of lighting was available, so there are glass floors throughout the upper stacks to allow light from the skylights to come down into the rows of books. They do run... More

The showpiece is the building. If you are visiting in the area, this building is worth some time to see. Take maybe an hour to tour it inside and out and to understand the history behind it and the judge in it's history. It's a moving experience. This library is not a tourist attraction and does not function as one.... More

Amazing Beaux Arts building! It's especially nice if you can get in on one of the tours of the building. The only downside is that parking is at a premium unless you park in the Autopark on Braddock Street.

We attend children's events there frequently and they always do very nice programs for the kids. The library has a lot of information and exhibits from the civil war.

While exploring Winchester VA we stopped in the Handley Library for a self-guided tour. The gift shop has a pamplet of the library. The library was built between 1907 and 1910 and opened to the public on August 22, 1913. It was a gift to the people of Winchester from Judge John Handley, a resident of Scranton, Pa. Original building... More

Unfortunately we visited on a Sunday, so we were only able to see the outside. It is a beautiful building, wonderful carvings. It is located very near the walking street, so it's worth at least a walk around it to see all the intricate decorations.

You can view this historic building in less than an hour. Take time to view the beautiful exterior and enter to see the wonderful circular stairs and stunning dome. Be sure to pick up the small printed brochure that provides an interesting background for your visit. Do not miss the children's section -- it is fun; and the view through... More

I'm a local but this is a Great library with a ton of character. I was there for a school meeting last week and always enjoy the beautiful architecture and friendly people each time I go. Couldn't ask for a better library!
