Historic Jamestowne is the original site of the first permanent English settlement in America. Ongoing archaeology at the site of James Fort has changed our understanding of the struggles and triumphs of early 1600s life in Virginia. Living history programs and an archaeology museum tell the story of this dramatic rediscovery. The site is jointly administered by the National Park Service and Preservation Virginia.

We spent just one afternoon here and enjoyed it very much! There is so much to see and learn. We just did an overview and sat in on a ranger talk - very good! Now we are planning to come back and spend two just days here.

We visited Jamestown as a daytrip from Williamsburg and were pleasantly surprised what an interesting and informative visit it was. Make a point to take the archeological tour. The tour was 1 1/2 hours long, but our guide was so entertaining the time flew by. I would have expected this to be a dry topic - but not at all... More

If you like battlefields and an exceptional ranger walk, this is for you. But give yourself plenty of time. There are trails all over and you have to go into Jamestowne and have time to walk around because the trails are really nice. Unfortunately, I didn’t give myself enough time to walk around. I really regret that but I just... More

Basically, when you walk through the gates, you are in real-time history! There also is an onsite restaurant that has plenty of goodies for the family! Also, the place is a bit noisy, so just watch for that!

We visited Jamestown and we are so glad we did. The site changes constantly because of the ongoing excavations. We started with a discussion with a women in the role of and indentured person - really very interesting. Then we went on a walking tour with a representative of the archeological group. That hour was so informative and interesting that... More

You have to see this spot when you are in the area, it's totally worth it. You will not believe how well preserved it is.

Jamestown was the first English settlement in the New World, and, after the capital's move to Williamsburg, it dropped from our collective memory. Fortunately, archaeologists and other scientists have brought it back and the site can be visited as a part of the Colonial National Historic Park. Once past the museum and memorial pillar, you can walk the banks of... More

I have visited Jamestowne on several occasions - I took the Archaeology tour which is guided by Preservation Virginia not the NPS. Mark was our guide and I wished it lasted longer than 65 minutes. Each time we come back the Archaeologists have discovered something new and people like Mark are able to tell the story seamlessly. We will be... More

This is an excellent opportunity to see some of the earliest history of our country. The exhibits are well done, and the staff is helpful.
