Historic Jamestowne is the original site of the first permanent English settlement in America. Ongoing archaeology at the site of James Fort has changed our understanding of the struggles and triumphs of early 1600s life in Virginia. Living history programs and an archaeology museum tell the story of this dramatic rediscovery. The site is jointly administered by the National Park Service and Preservation Virginia.

There is not a lot to see while walking around, as it is mostly the ruins and remnants from England's earliest attempt at an new world settlement. It may be beneficial to time the visit with a tour from the National park's interpreters. The gem of the museum is the archaearium. Even it's design and construction makes it interesting. Inside... My husband and I visited Jamestowne over Christmas break and Historic Jamestowne was both of our favorite parts. It wasn't too expensive and you got to see the real deal. I loved seeing the pictures of the archaelogical digs they were doing, and if you go in the warmer months you can actually see them digging. The archaearium had some... More

To me Historic Jamestown is a very interesting place. Of course there are J. Settlement and Col. Williamsburg, but Historic Jamestown really takes you back in history. To walk around on the actual spot the settlers arrived; to see what was excavated and put on display in that beautiful archeological museum. To learn how very few people survived their first... We took our children here and they immersed themselves in everything. Loved seeing where the settlers lived and how. Great place for families to learn what they don't teach in school.

When you get here, you feel amazed that many years ago there is a James Settlement. I wish to see the past living enacted in a movie so I can make memories.

We enjoyed this historical site including the beautiful location on the James River. It is worth that the Jamestown Settlement attraction which is nearby but separate is actually more interesting especially for children. The historic site will mostly appeal to true historians and those interested in archeology.

Good for the family. Not only are there guided reviews and also a Junior program for the kids to do, but lots of info to read and it is very educational and interesting.

The kids really enjoyed seeing the dig site. The indoor museum area was nice too. The best part was the glass blowing area. Lots of stuff up there. We also walked over to the beach and watched the ferry come and go. It's controlled by the National Park system, so if you have a pass you can get in free.
