Preservation Virginia acquired the Cape Henry Lighthouse in 1930 when Congress deeded the house and 1.77 Acres of land to the organization in order to preserve it and make it accessible to the public. Over the years lighthouse and its surroundings have been restored including repairing the lantern after damage from Hurricane Barbara in 1953, repairing the damaged original Aquia sandstone and restoring the surrounding dunes.

Today, visitors to the Cape Henry Lighthouse can climb to the top of the tower to enjoy spectacular views of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean.

The lighthouse is on a military base so a car search is done before you can enter. We could not see much of the lighthouse because you can not proceed past the gift shop if you have a child under 42" which we did. We were only able to see the very top of the lighthouse from the parking lot.

Beautiful views of the bay I am so happy to have come by this place for a quick diversion trip. Be prepared to climb many stairs.

A must see if in the area due to its historical significance. Can climb to top if able to. If not familiar with the very aggressive plant in the southeast USA, they have it well labeled here

I was terrified going up to the top of the lighthouse because of the narrow open steps. I almost turned back twice but kept going because as people were coming down, they kept saying I was almost there. The steps are barely big enough for one person to go up so, I had to stop several times and let the... More

There are something like 200 steps to get to the top of Americas First Lighthouse. Is it an easy climb? Well my 80 something year old mother made it and a cute gal with both knees replaced a few months ago both made it so I would say yes. The view from the top is fantastic. You can see the... More

The lighthouse is ok. Nothing great. Lots of steps, the windows are dirty, so forget about any great photos. It's hot even in the fall. There were so many people - we were 'trapped' at the top, as people kept coming, there's really not a lot of room, and the kids were bored after 2 minutes.

But you may be huffing and puffing by the time you reach the pinnacle of The Cape Henry Lighthouse in VIrginia Beach. In the event you simply need a get-away to clear your mind, the steps to the top of this historic lighthouse will land you atop a structure with an incredible view, where, on a clear day, you can... Historic with great views. Climb the steps to the tower and then ascend the lighthouse spiral stairway to see the 360 degree view of Ft. Story and its beach.

Family visited the lighthouse on beautiful December day. Once at the top, we could see for miles. Amazing that they built this when they did. The staff in the gift shop were very knowledgeable and nice. Be prepared for ID check and vehicle inspection. Also, there is an entry fee, depending on age and AAA, etc.
