Located only 6 miles from Surry Courthouse and 15 miles from Colonial Williamsburg and Victorian Smithfield, the 1,947-acre Chippokes Plantation State Park invites visitors to explore thousands of years of natural and Native American and over 394 years of African and European American histories while basking on James River sun-kissed beaches, relaxing amidst nature and a roaring campfire, and visiting other regional attractions. In the same year Africans were first brought to Jamestown, in 1619 Captain William Powell was granted his patent for Chippokes Plantation. By 1626 Chippokes Plantation became a working farm and to this day remains an operational agricultural enterprise. Between April and October visitors may tour the 1854 Jones-Stewart Victorian Mansion and eight, beautifully-appointed exhibit rooms showcase how people decorated and lived in the years before the American Civil War. The Mansion hosts periodic Hearth Cooking Demonstrations at its detached Summer Kitchen. Please check for program details. During Summer months take guided walking tours of "Quarter Lane". Located adjacent to the 1816 Antebellum Riverhouse visitors follow in the footsteps of enslaved African Americans and their contributions to building America during this informative African-American Heritage Program. Please check for program details. Overnight guests may choose between four cabins and fifty water and electric campsites. Reservations are recommended.

We decided to make a trip to Virginia to spend Christmas with our kids and were hard pressed to find a place to stay that would allow our three dogs and this turned out to be the only reasonably priced choice. I am so glad we decided to save money on lodging because our stay at Chippokes was near perfect.... More

The State Park staff is wonderful. Interesting for all ages. Stay in one of the 4 period-houses that they offer as overnight rentals. The Park Police to the Rangers/Educators (thanks Megan) to the cleaning staff (thanks Teresa/Theresa) are all knowledgeable about the structures and planation history. They took one on one time with me happily sharing the facts of the... More

We were looking to spend the Thanksgiving holiday camping in the Colonial Historical area around Williamsburg. We took a chance on Chippokes because it is across the river from the historical peninsula and would normally necessitate a long drive up to Richmond and then back down to the historical sites. Enter the phenomenal Scotland/Jamestown Ferry !! This state run ferry... More

We throughly enjoyed our trip to the state park, especially the plantation tour. The guides were knowledgeable and friendly. The reenactment of characters provided an enriching experience. To be on land that is on the oldest continuous farm on our country was fascinating. The grounds were maintained well. Found while researching my ancestry... 7 generations ago this plantation was once... More

When traveling, sometimes you find the most interesting destinations by accident. You were going somewhere else and found something you weren't looking for. Such is the case with Chippokes Plantation State Park in Surry, Virginia, just across the James River from historic Jamestown. We were staying in Williamsburg and visiting Jamestown and a guide tipped us off to Chippokes. "Right... More

We took a day trip to this festival yesterday. The weather was perfect for the ride on the Jamestown ferry. Once on the other side, there was only one sign for Chippokes State Park, after that you're on your own. Yes, we forgot the GPS, that always helps! After a couple of wrong turns, we finally made it to the... More

We stopped in on a Thursday and none of the buildings were open for tours and we only saw one park ranger all day. Gift shop and bathrooms just a short ways in. W/C accessible. Small gift shop but pick up trail guide there. Lots of walking trails. Follow the trail map and read along. The River House is nice... More

on several occasions we visited the State Park and we always find cheerful and well informed employees at the park, there is always something new to learn and this time we went down to the beach to swim, once again we had a great time for just 5$ for 4 people. thanks

I've never camped here, because I live so close. But we go here often on nice days to walk on the beach and get a little sun. We recommend to history lovers, shark tooth seekers, and trail hikers

We drove up for the afternoon from Virginia Beach. Our gps took us down a lot of single wide back roads which was interesting but we finally found the park. It's only $5 to park for the day and they do take credit cards. We were pretty much just there to see the plantation house. The tour is free and... More
