I have to say I'm not a bird watcher, my wife is. However, the staff was very helpful, friendly and seemed to know their jobs extremely well. I had a pleasant walk and learned about the history of the swamp. It is a beautiful area.

If in the Virginia / North Carolina border area you must visit the Great Dismal Swamp that link George Washington to it as he helped found a land company for the 40,000 protected acres. He wanted to drain it! They linked the two states by...More

I agree with other reviewers, that the place is aptly named. I could not imagine going in warmer temperatures, because I suspect that mosquitos are rampant. As it was, I was there in early April and the temperatures were perfect for walking, but still cool...More

Great Dismal Swamp, indeed. The adjective Dismal could be replaced with the words Dreary or Bleak or Depressing and be just as apt. The self-guided driving tour consists of a 6 mile gravel lane sojourn thru a monotonous panoply of fallen trees, rotting leaves, copper-colored...More

I can't say that I think this is worth the trip in the winter unless you're out to have a pleasant hike. We did see a fish crane and a deer. The headquarters was closed. They do provide some brochures though and the lake is...More

Went too late to do the trails because they close when the sun goes down but drove down to the lookout for a stunning view. Seems like there is a lot to see here!

We were in Suffolk recently and decided to make the drive out to Lake Drummond. The 6 mile drive through the swamp was fun trying to spot wildlife, and we even got out and walked on one of the wooden paths to an interesting shelter...More

We were in Suffolk Va and realized the Great Dismal Swamp is nearby. We had visited the canal & visitor's center on the eastern NC side several years ago and wanted to see Lake Drummond. The drive to the park headquarters through farm country was...More

Well it is not all ugly. The lake is beautiful. The last mile or more (of 6 miles) to the lake was burned over a few years ago and the regrowth is beautiful colors of orange, red and more. But I have hiked and biked...More

The access is by a narrow road. If you go on a weekday, there may not be a lotof congestion. I suspect that during tourist peak times it will be tough to get around. There really is not a lot ofinteresting things to see by...More
