The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

Marvelous plays written by Shakespeare and his contemporaries, complete with staging as it was done at the original Black Friars in England - "we do it with the lights on." The company has parts in all plays being performed (usually 3 different plays in a...More

We had stopped by the theater just to see about having a tour, and found that some seats were still available for the performance the following evening. On the spur of the moment, we decided to attend the theater. What a wonderful experience! The theater...More

We spent a wonderful evening at this beautiful intimate theater. The price is great, the performers are energetic and talented, and the show was wonderful. I'm not a Shakespeare fan, but thoroughly enjoyed the evening. I would say that the seating is not the MOST...More

The theatre itself is beautiful and the actors are some of the best out there! Be sure to stop nextdoor at the Stonewall Jackson Sorrels Lounge and Bar for an after play beverage!

A fun show - theater is small and intimate. Bench seats provide enough room - however, get a seat in the bottom section or center balcony - very hard (almost impossible) to see from upstairs side seats

Went tonight to see Cyrano de Bergerac. Great play. Actors were terrific. So glad we went. Plan to do again next time we're in Staunton.

The center is very, very cool. Awesome in fact. The actors are great but make sure you know the play your going to see. A lot of them are just crap. Nothing but dialogue you can't understand. Twice we've left at intermission because the play...More

Yes the seats in front of the stage do have individual backs. In addition one can find a limited number of sleeve cushions to fit over the backs to make them even more comfortable. Ask the ushers where they are

To be honest Tom it would depend on the play. I think it may be hard for the 5 year old to sit through a play. 10 and 12, I think would get a kick out of it. I would call the theatre and ask them what they suggest, they are... More
