About
As the largest art museum in southwestern Virginia, the Taubman Museum of Art serves as the region's premier destination for world-class arts and culture. Founded in 1951 as the Roanoke Fine Arts Center, the Museum now resides in a landmark facility designed by renowned architect Randall Stout and named one of the nation's best designed museums by Architectural Digest. The Museum's collection focuses on American art and includes more than 2,200 works from artists such as Romare Bearden, Thomas Hart Benton, Thomas Eakins, Audrey Flack, Robert Henri, Judith Leiber, Sally Mann, Norman Rockwell, John Singer Sargent, and Purvis Young; twelve galleries support ten to twelve original exhibitions per year. Signature events include the International Wine Festival, Bourbon + Bacon, Roanoke Arts Pop, Sidewalk Art Show, and monthly late nights held the first Friday of each month. The Taubman Museum is among only one-third of museums in the nation to offer free general daily admission.

We absolutely loved this museum. The exhibits were varied but reflected the area. For myself I was very impressed by the Rob Hite sculptures. The museum staff were very enthusiastic about their beautiful museum. I would recommend anyone visiting Roanoke should come here.

This museum in downtown Roanoke is an architectural gem. Not only that it has nice galleries and the Art was well presented. All of the Galleries are on the second floor although the first floor is interesting with hanging art.

When we were there in May 2023 they had an outstanding display of Louis Comfort Tiffany works. But not only that was outstanding but their permanent collections also were really good. There is much more exhibit space than you may expect. We spent an hour or more at Taubman.

If you are in Roanoke this is worth a visit. Just look for the glass contemporary building in downtown that's the museum

Some lovely art in this small and free museum. The permanent collection rotates so you are never sure what will be on show, but it will be worth your time.

Nice small art museum with interesting architecture building design. Only complaints would be, they need to be open on additional days of the week.

Almost gave it 5* considering it’s free to visit. It’s a great little museum to check out if you’re in the area. When we went we were fortunate enough to catch their Betty Branch retrospective which was a highlight and definitely worth seeing to get some insight into a local artist (Sep 2022-Mar 2023). Their main base collection I was somewhat less into with the exception of the Judith Leiber purse collections. It was worth the extra $10 to enter the Titian to Monet exhibition and see some more famous paintings and try the immersive experience.

Free museum, interesting architecture, dresses from various operas billow from the ceiling in the lobby. The art is all on the 2nd floor. There is street parking and a parking garage nearby. Not a large collection but it does include a Norman Rockwell. There was an exhibition of Judith Leiber handbags that was amazing, the video in the room had shots of them being carried by J Lo, Lady Gaga, and one of the Kardashians. They are heavily embedded with all sorts of colorful jewels and absolutely stunning.

Four artists who were visiting really enjoyed both the temporary and permanent collections. Cool architecture and free to the public! Nice and knowledgable staff.

From out of town visiting the area. Great little museum that is free admission! It was the perfect size for my 5 year old to be excited about seeing art but not too long to completely bore and overwhelm her.

We were drawn by the architecture of the building (done by a fellow who had spent several years working with Frank Gehry). The central lobby had an installation done by E.V. Day that was quite the 3D installation (dresses from prominent New York operas, suspended fancifully from the ceiling). The staff were knowledgeable and helpful and pointed out a number of things about the collection that would not have been obvious to the ordinary visitor. Roanoke is lucky to have such a place! Oh, and you can't beat the price: free!

The free admission did not include admission to all of the galleries. You can go out side on the upper floor and see a great view of Roanoke.
