A hidden Gem that will thrill and challenge you…with a taste of Ireland to boot!
Jun 2021
Challenging, Fun, Links style, dog legs, some blind shots, spectacular views, undulating greens, excellent conditions and professional positive staff.

From the moment you arrive, and view the golf course, you know you are in for a exceptional and rewarding experience. The slope on this course commands you to choose the right Tee box, the right club and to hit accurate shots… If you are errant on any of those decisions, plan on some frustration or losing a ball… however, when it all goes right, this is one of the most rewarding and interesting courses I have played. From the moment we finished our round, I was determined to replay this course again (course knowledge will help) and to let my golf buddies know about this hidden gem.

The clubhouse sits high on a hill with sweeping views of hole one and eighteen. We were met at our car, with a cart, by the warm and friendly staff. After checking in and surprisingly affordable rates, we headed off to the practice range, which was on grass, with a chipping and putting area. If you are playing this course, for the first time, and without someone with course knowledge, the yardage book is helpful for the blind shots and appropriate landing areas. Being on the greens, does not guarantee a two put, being above the hole is a possible three putt.

Tee boxes, fairways and greens were in superb conditions, at times like hitting off a carpet. A plethora of green side and fairway bunkers were in fair condition, hittable but evidently the recent rain made them inconsistent but playable.

The course meanders through rolling countryside, each hole unique from the other. Par threes present uphill and downhill challenges and if flag placement is at the most difficult area, plan on celebrating a bogey. From its high venue, the first hole is a strong uphill dog leg left, to an elevated green, protected by bunkers… typical of this course. The rolling grasses and rock walls caused one of our players (who grew up in Ireland), to remark that this course reminded him of the courses in Ireland. In fact the Irish flag tops the flag stick on most greens! Wayward shots can find tall grasses and well defined hills, slopes and forested areas, beyond the fairways. You are thinking on every hole and hitting a straight shot may not be the best choice on numerous left and right dog legs.

Long hitters may be tempted to cut the dogleg, but you better know your distance or you will be hunting for your ball. There are only two holes with water the 17th and 18th for a challenging finish, but numerous blind shots or uphill and downhill hole are included with the many doglegs

In short, play this course, and if you can… play with someone who knows the course. I can understand that the pace of play may be slow at times, especially on weekends, with individuals trying to find their balls, but this course was a treat that FAR exceeded my expectations. Will return soon.

What a Thrill
Oct 2019
My wife and I played here on the advice we received from Dan from Washington. Being of Irish descent, I just had to play here. What a wonderful surprise. My wife was awe struck by the rugged beauty and the layout. A big thank you to Chip and his staff for making this a most enjoyable day. Would definitely play here again if we are ever back in the area. A very tough course, but if you play it smart, it is a great golf experience. Stay out of the pickies. Bring a few extra balls. Fairway woods not necessary. Play smart.

Beautiful, but unforgiving
Oct 2019 • Couples
Beautiful course and well maintained, even with severe lack of rain, but it is like playing overseas. Tight fairway, lots of hills and brush. Greens are FAST. Great day, but a lot of work. Don't think this course works for women, although we get many advantages with tee box placement.

Back and Better Than Ever

Royal New Kent has come back strong. If you saw it last spring while still in bankruptcy and awaiting a buyer, you could recognize the holes if you were familiar with the layout, but it was overgrown and rough. I played it this week, my first time since it reopened, and was thoroughly impressed. The greens were exceptional - healthy, no heat stress, fast, and all the subtle breaks were in play. It is a links style course and the fairways were firm and fast, commensurate with the design style and our dry conditions this fall. The bunkers, a previous sore point were are refreshed with white sand, and the severe faces that never held the sand have been replaced with grass. They are still a hazard to be avoided, but much more maintenance friendly. All the Mike Stranz design elements remain - any modifications were done to improve overall condition and maintenance, and kept the fangs of the original design. Pricing is a bit on the premium side, but so is the course.

Big Time Challenge - Ya Gotta Do It
May 2019 • Friends
Have played it on average twice a year over the past five years...usually when I'm in the mood to punish/test what little golf talent I have. So when I found out it was being "reborn" I had to give it another try...and it didn't disappoint. What Chip and his team have done is pretty remarkable. Conditions are great, greens are tough but true, overall conditions as good or better than any in the area. Initially the advertised and unadvertised cost per round were a bit steep...ok, they were really steep. The dust has settled and in my humble opinion, very much worth the cost...a bit more than the average, but you're getting a lot more than the average. One issue I can't overlook is the professionalism and courtesy the staff exhibited, from pro shop to greens maintenance crew...definitely Top Shelf! I look forward to playing it again when I'm in the area with my sticks.... I wish RNK only the very best going forward and HIGHLY RECOMMEND if you're looking for a good challenge on a well maintained Irish Links Track.

Royal New Kent is a tough links course that use to be top rated in Virginia. It has a new owner who is making the investment needed to regain its stature.

Links course

The wrong New Kent Golf Course and restaurant have been closed for a major overhaul. This is a very difficult golf course as it is a links course and then many of the hold your not sure where the green is. You know the direction but you don't see the green. It's an excellent golf course and has a lot of natural beauty. The Clubhouse has a restaurant inside and when they open next spring I'm sure that it will also be redecorated. The food was good before and I'm sure under the new management the food will be of excellent quality as well as the service.

Its gorgeous

It looks spectacular. This is no ordinary golf course. You have to be able to get the ball in the air off the tee or you will lose quite a few. Hard to play on a sunny hot day because there isn't much shade.

Royal New Kent is in better shape than I've seen it in years. This course plays tough and is not meant for those who spray it everywhere - it's very much a ball placement / shot management course but has very interesting holes and great views. Most folks will lose a few extra balls here on albeit not so bad shots. If that doesn't bother you then you really should play this course. The people are great - very hospitable and you'll feel welcomed.
