About
A world search, which also included France, Germany, North and South America as well as Australia for the ideal area with perfect conditions for viticulture, especially for Pinot Noir, brought Kai Schubert and Marion Deimling, graduates of the German Viticulture and Oenology University in Geisenheim to the Wairarapa, New Zealand. Schubert vineyards are closely planted and the unique climate produces low yields and internationally award winning wines with intense and complex character; predominantly exported to currently 25 countries.

6 of us turned up and asked for a tasting where only 4 of us were tasting the wines.
The women who was working at the time gave us glares and no explanation of the wines, no small talk or anything. Made us feel so uncomfortable there. The last wine was given to us by the man working there and he smiled and interacted with us, gave a wonderful speel about the wine, so our experience ended great but still ruined our vibe.

My partner and I stopped by here on the 2nd of July. The woman serving spent most of the time on her phone and barely spoke to us, even pouring the wine she just told us the name of it and walked off. There was no history of the company, nothing about the wines and didn’t even ask us if we enjoyed them. We didn’t felt welcome at all and it was a very awkward experience. The wine was okay, we didn’t buy any and the lady looked very mad that we didn’t, again making us feel very awkward. I’d recommended not stopping here and visiting the other local wineries.

Perhaps 10 minutes walk from town, close to where we were staying though. Neil the host was charming and welcoming and involved everyone even when large party arrived. Good organic wine, indoor and outdoor seating. Does do food but had a huge run at weekend so wasn’t offering any on the day. Worth a visit just for a little banter and good wine

At the moment there is a food cart there so you can make a lunch of it.
The cellar door experience was very good again.
Tasted lots of wines and brought a few home for the cellar.
Friendly staff and now you can have a bite to eat - and buy wine by the glass while you are at it.

We visited Schubert Wines recently and I was incredibly disappointed by the treatment I received. The woman conducting the tasting at no point acknowledged or looked at me during the 15 minute tasting (despite the fact that we were the only ones there). She talked to everyone else in our four person party (even my partner who wasn't tasting), but didn't have the common courtesy, decency or respect to address me. Initially, I shrugged off her lack of acknowledgement. We decided not to buy any bottles of wine, so my friend proceeded to pay for her tasting for which the woman said that's fine and thanked her. However, when the woman was charging my tasting fee she remarked 'that's cheap.' I left the cellar door but then returned to make a complaint, after confirming that I hadn't misheard, as my friends and partner had also heard her say 'that's cheap'. I voiced my disappointment to the woman and she responded by denying that she had treated me that way or that she had made that comment. She finished by telling me that she was sorry 'IF' she had said that. I was absolutely appalled by the way she had treated me and her disingenuous 'apology.' The cavalier and disrespectful manner in which she not only conducted the wine tasting but treated my complaint is the reason I'm posting this public review. The only difference between my friends, my partner and myself is that I am of British Asian descent. It was a shame that my experience at Schubert ruined what was otherwise a great wine tasting weekend away in Martinborough.

Dear Ullswater22, Thank you for your message and I am very sorry to hear that you had a dissatisfying visit at our tasting room. My apologies for this as obviously at our tasting room we want to be ambassadors for our winery and welcoming visitors to discover and enjoy our wines. I have talked to the team and can assure you that at no point you were meant to feel unwelcomed. If it came across that way I can only apologise but as mentioned this is certainly not what we would intend to achieve. Regarding the credit card there had also been an unfortunate misunderstanding, referring to the “chip” of the credit card and not “cheap”. So instead of swiping the card it had to be inserted into the credit card machine, hence the comment : “That’s a chip [credit card]” It is concerning however that you are accusing us that apparently the disappointing treatment at your visit would have been due to your British Asian descent. I am sorry if you did not feel welcomed as expected but accusing us of being discriminatory I cannot accept and is in fact very defamatory. We are immigrants to New Zealand ourselves and have always been treated with respect and friendliness. Therefore it is of utmost importance to us treating people the same way we have been treated. Furthermore we export our wines to more than 30 countries that we also visit regularly. So being a foreigner in different countries many weeks per year we respect, embrace and love different cultures. Once again my apologies if you did not enjoy your visit but accusing us of discrimination because of a wine tasting that did not live up to your expectation I find quite harsh. Regards, Kai Schubert

We stopped at Schubert wines right at closing, and to make matters worse the manager at the cellar was planning to close early for a special appointment with a French buyer. Even so, he offered to provide us a tasting while he waited. He was very talkative about his wines and wine making, and New Zealand in general, and inquisitive about where we were from and our travels. When we told him a server at Elephant Hill in Napier had recommended his wines, he seemed surprise and very pleased. In general, I thought his wines were very good despite there not being that one over-the-top wine that makes a place. The rose was good, and I thought among young Pinot Noirs we had tasted, his Marion's Vineyard Pinot Noir was the best. We bought a bottle of Dolce, a sweet dessert wine for evening sipping, and left just as the French buyer arrived. Oh and a comment about the Gabriel glasses they use. These glasses really do seem to enhance the bouquet and flavour of the wines; if I could have trusted shipping without breakage, I might have bought a set.

Dear JohnAnn B, Thanks very much for your kind words about your visit at our tasting room. As a small winery with only very few staff it is always a bit tricky so I am glad to hear that even so the tasting room was going to close a bit early that your tasting still worked out. Glad too that you enjoyed tasting the wines; and particularly from the Gabriel Glass that we import from Austria. Thanks again very much for your visit and I hope we can welcome you back in Martinborough one day soon. Kind regards, Kai Schubert

One of my favourite little vineyards to visit when in Martinborough. Very helpful and informative. Beautiful reds! and sell the gorgeous wine glasses here as well.
Well worth a stop and taste

For us the best cellar door we visited in Martinborough (others so overhyped and impersonal I'll not bother to review them). All the wines we tasted here were really good (no exception). The German lady who was poring the tastes was friendly and knowledgeable.

We stopped here for a tasting after lunch on a very quiet Sunday. The wines they served were all excellent especially their Pinot Noir and I loved their dessert wine...so delicious! As the cellar door was not very busy that day, we got to chat with the lady who managed the tasting quite a bit - learning about their organic wine making philosophy and information about Martinborough as a wine region. Highly recommended!!

I thoroughly enjoyed the tasting here, both the wines and the company of the pourer.
Favorite was the Con Brio. This would be on my top three list for Martinborough.
Others include Palliser and Martinborough.
