At around 4 km distance, and around 15 minutes travel, this is a short ride. Including a 20 minute stop at the terminus and the return journey, the whole thing takes less than an hour. But it is in a spectacular gorge, from a remarkable mining town, and serves to highlight the isolation and inadequacies of infrastructure that plagued one... More

I would not consider myself a train buff but have been on a few over my many years & this is one of the more average train journeys. Was disappointed that a diesel loco was used – it would be so much more fun to have a steam loco – but appreciate that would involve a lot more volunteer involvement... More

You will (pleasantly) shake along the line from Walhalla for 20 minutes through the ferns and alongside the creek. A 20 minute stop at Thomson to admire the bridge and river before the return journey. If the sun is shining this is a very pleasant excursion. Thanks for the vote if you found this review helpful.

Purchase your tickets in the Station and board your train. Wooden bench seats and a gentle ride down to Thomson Station at the other end of the track. Enough time for an ice cream and to take some photos then ride back to Walhalla. Perfect.

Have been coming to Walhalla for over 40years, been on the WGR railway many times. This was our first time in ten years as we now live interstate. Walhalla is still a hidden gem, a great place to spend a few quiet days. Many things to do, but the highlight is the railway and the amazing scenery, we were here... More

Wonderful little railway in a glorious secluded valley. Surrounded by ferns and forests. Built on the sides of the Thomson Creek as a gold mining town this preserved railway served the miners. Only a short ride all over in an hour but then you can see the charms of the rest of the valley.

Spectacular experience of Australian bush and mining heritage. This s virgin experience of native Victoria as it was before white settlement.

This is a great little train journey through the gorge and down to the Thomson River station and return. Old wooden carriages pulled by little diesel locos. This is a very family friendly trip and there were lots of children enjoying it. Well worth doing and Walhalla is a lovely little village full of history from the gold days.

We really enjoyed our trip through the countryside on the Train. It was a lovely day as we travelled down to Thomson Station and return. Choice of open carriage or inside carriage. Reasonably priced. Ride took just over an hour with approx. 20 mins stopover at Thomson Station for train to turn around and refuel. Thoroughly recommend to all ages.... More
