On our first recent visit we discovered that lots of improvements have been made to the gardens, with a refurbished Japanese garden, some great exhibits of peonies, clematis, etc. in the gardening Which? test gardens and, best of all, great improvements and additions to the animal/zoo... We took my disabled mum here, they had mobility scooters to borrow. The gardens looked lovely and were great to give you ideas. We lived going round all the different areas and the added bonus of a few animals. The staff were friendly and the young man on reception was very supportive and helpful. Well worth the entrance fee and... More

I love the gardens, but then I would having worked there. Gives great ideas on what to do with your 'backyard' to make it an oasis. Nice restaurant with good, fair priced, snacks. Well worth a visit

Hi Norman thanks for the positive review - a bit worried that you gave us 5 stars in 2013 and only 4 now!! lol seriously, is there anything in particular we need to pick up on as I would really appreciate the views of someone who knows us well and obviously has an affection for us and our work. bests... The garden is ostensibly a training ground for those on the range of horticulture courses offered by Capel Manor College and so, as a visitor, there is obviously a large amount of 'backstage' on view - both a blessing and a curse. The first part of the gardens you come into is a Chelsea Flower Show style patchwork of plots... More

Hi Thanks for your comments on trip advisor. I think you have really caught what makes is different as we are a living garden/educational experience and an exhibition of student work. The one surprise was your take on then Old Manor House Garden, which really surprised me as this is normally in the top 3 when we ask public to... More

No matter what time of year, Capel Manor is a delight for amateur gardeners as well as horticulturists; I belong to the former group and my sister is seriously qualified (BSc/M ScHort); we always come away with ideas and information and all kinds of good intentions to garden intelligently. Enfield is privileged to have such an amazing facility. If you... More

Low cost entry considering what you get to see. Beautifully designed garden rooms on show. One or two are in need of maintenance however the rest are very absorbing to the senses. Go in warmer weather when gardens are naturally looking their best. Enjoy the maze and water gardens towards the back of the estate. Cafe is low cost to... More

Hi Paul,

I am the principal at Capel Manor college and we were very concerned with and upset about your comments posted on trip advisor. As you can see we generally attract very good comments and your comments are quite at variance with others visiting at the same time.

I am not sure if you realise that we are a charity and we rely on income from visitors to help us offer education and training to over 2,000 students.

as I am sure you are aware any garden is a living thing and as such has moods and periods when it is being prepared or revitalised.

As it happens I am puzzled by some of your comments. For exam[le there is no record of the Japanese garden being closed since its refurbishment was completed several weeks ago so I would be interested in when you visited and why you thought it was closed (the senior gardener on duty on Sunday 5th and other staff are quite clear that the Japanese garden was open on that day.

There is a programme for dead heading roses where appropriate and we are following this. Also some ramblers climbers and rugosa's are deliberately left as they produce hips which are ornamental in the autumn.

A lot of he gardens are sponsored and also won medals at Chelsea. Your comment re clashing colours is subjective and personal and one of the things we pride ourselves on is our diversity and the fact that everyone seems to find something they like when they visit. We are also surprised about your comment that the gardens are repetitive as this is the exact opposite to the normal comments.

Also we have just experienced a heat wave and that has put strain on the gardens.

We would like to thank you for taking the time to comment and would be happy to meet you sometime to explain more about what we are doing and what we hope to achieve.

best wishes
