This hermitage was dug into the rock around 1548 by some friars. Legend, however, tells of how the Virgin remained hidden within the walls of the ancient castle during the eight centuries of Muslim rule on the peninsula and reappeared in 1586 after the fall of the Moors of Spain.
The sanctuary consists of two caves. In one, the small church. In the other some sacred objects are displayed.
Inside the church there is the image of the Madonna, patron saint of Mijas, for whom there is great devotion.

We always visit during a holiday. The chapel is very small, carved out of the rock. There are lots of crucifixes and rosaries tucked into the rock wall and there are always lots of flowers in front of the alter. There is no problem with taking photographs. It takes around ten minutes to look around but longer if you wish to sit and enjoy the atmosphere. There is a pleasant restaurant at the other end of the terrace. The views are stunning. Many brides stop here for a photo opportunity. Mijas really is a delight.

La Ermita Virgen De la Pena is a small chapel on the mountain side in Mijas. It looks like a cave inside with little natural light. There are some magnificent artefacts inside. A very nice place to see if visiting Mijas.

I don't normally visit chapels/churches but couldn't resist a peep inside this little chapel whilst visiting Mijas last time.
Steeped in history & dug out of the rock by monks centuries ago, make this chapel a little bit special.
Inside, there is an altar & a few benches for worshippers, tho' it isn't that private with sightseers taking photos.
Very cool in the very hot weather!!!
We like to visit the Pueblo for the day, to have a mooch around the shops, enjoy coffee in one place, then have lunch with a bottle of wine in another restaurant.
There are so many to choose from, it's hard to decide!.
Last time we visited, we bought a stunning piece of Lladro in Tamisa, & Benjamin remembered us from a previous visit where we purchased a female Spanish dancer, so this visit, purchased another piece, a couple of Spanish dancers in a pose & the definition of their bodies is just stunning.
They both look absolutely gorgeous in a cabinet in our apartment in Spain.
He gave us a good discount too!
Loli in their other shop La Great in the square was very helpful also.
Nice people to do business with.
Always worth a visit when visiting Mijas Pueblo.
Parking is never a problem.... Multistorey of 10 levels costing....... 1euro... yes! that is correct.. 1 euro for the whole day!!!!

Carved into a rock at the end of a cliff the chapel is small and worth visiting - only takes 5/10 minutes. The main chapel is small with splendid statuary but off to one side are glass display cases of ornate clothing and religious paraphernalia, as well as some benches. There is no entry fee or apparently supervisors and no fussy entry restrictions. Offertory boxes are available. Approached by steps.

The Virgin of the “Peña.” It was located just next to the burro "donkey" taxi stand . The makeshift chapel inside a cave-like building is such a far cry from the ornate churches and chapels we are accustomed to seeing.
We have been here lots of times and it was a favourite place to visit by my dear mother sadly she passed away last year , she loved the the popular tradition of writing prayers on pieces of paper and then placing them inside the chapel walls .
Mijas pueblo is a hidden gem for tourist , plenty to see and the views from the gardens "next to the bull ring / church" are spectacular .
On a clear day you can see Gibraltar and the mountains of northern Africa so don't forget you camera.

My daughter and I took a Tui day trip to Fuengirola market and Mijas on Tuesday 2nd July 2019. While in Mijas for a couple of hours we visited the little grotto/chapel Virgen de la Pena. It's very peaceful inside and ideal to say a few prayers or light candles for special intentions or to remember loved ones. Theres a little gift shop next door which is reasonably priced. I would recommend you visit it, in particular if you are a believer.

This chapel is worth a visit while walking through Mijas. Its a little bit of an uphilll walk from the Plaza Virgen de la Pena. It has a solemn cave like feel if you can see it without a throng of tourists. The surrounding plaza is a comfortable place to rest with benches and an impressive view over the valley.

The Capella Virgen de la Pena (Chapel of the Virgin of the Rock) is a small chapel carved out of the rock by a monk in the middle 17th century. There is a shrine and to one side a small area of exhibits with some costumes etc.
I'm not sure if this is really still in use as a proper place of prayer but there are pews that you can use if you wish.
Worth popping into for 5 minutes to see if you are passing, but not to make a trip for.
