Evocative and Peaceful

A tribute to a mans ability to create a haven of peace and prayer. Very moving and an introduction to an incredible mirador sensitively landscaped.

While not a reason on its own to travel to Mijas Pueblo, you should make a point of visiting while you are there. There is a simple spirituality which one might find at the Capella. There is also an attractive marauder just outside the stone structure with an excellent outlook over the coast.

Capella Virgen de la Pena or Chapel of the Virgin of the Rock is a very small chapel carved out of the rock by a Carmelite monk in the middle 17th century. Virgin of the Rock is the patron saint of Mijas and there's an image here. Interesting cave chapel and the views along the coast are not to be... More

The Virginia de la Pena sanctury lies in a cave on the plaza. It is an outcrop of rock and has a statue of Jesus on it. The views surrounding are amazing. Worth a visit for the views alone. There is a cafe/ restaurant there which serves typical tourist food. Go inside the cave--this where in the 15th century two... More

The patron saint of Mijas is the Virgen de la Peña. It is why there is a chapel called the Hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña in the pueblo. The chapel was built by Mercedarian monks in 1520 and inside is a carved wooden image of the virgin allegedly dating back to AD850. It is a delightful little building,... More

The day we visited there were few visitors and the donkeys were all tethered in a long line, to the rails. Some had sacking type cloth bags which may have contained food, over their mouths. They looked very sad really, and whilst we were reassured that they are well treated, I couldn't help but feel sorry for them having to... More

Although not a couple to visit historical/religious sites on our holidays I must admit my wife and myself were both impressed and interested to view this fascinating grotto/church right in the centre of the village. I would not want to spoil the story behind the grotto but would certainly recommend a visit to read the background and see the exhibits... More

Capella Virgen de la Pena (the patron saint of Mijas), is located on the Paseo del Compas which is close to the town hall and the public car park of Mijas where all the Tourist buses arrive and next to the spectacular panoramic view point of El Compas. The Shrine to the Virgin of the Rock was originally excavated by... More
