Mijas is about 20 minutes drive inland from Marbella coast. A picturesque mountain village that holds its own toreador bull ring. There are an abundance of shops here and the views over the Costa del Sol are stunning. In a 4 day trip I visited Mijas twice. It is just splendid.

There is a woman in the square who sells ice-cream and fresh lemon ice drinks! Amazing!

Mijas is a typical Spanish village that you imagine. All the buildings are white and slightly shabby looking. Narrow shopping streets lead to more narrow streets and everything seems to lead to the square regardless of the direction you are walking in.

There is a cool little shrine to the Saint who is believed to protect the area of Mijas that is built into the rock. A very calming and awe inspiring sight. (It is open and free to go inside). You can also walk through and up to the top of it for a magnificent view over the mountains.

There is a Calla de Mijas on the coast. This is not the same place. The true Mijas is inland and although one of the roads to get there is very narrow and windy, there is a newer road that is fine to drive on.

There is something about Mijas that really draws you in. From the pretty little white buildings to the gorgeous view of Spain and the sea, this is definitely one to put on your 'to visit' list!

My husband and I were not super into the overly touristy pueblo blanco village of Mijas, but absolutely loved the Pico Mijas hike (orange trail). The trail that we took was the most challenging of the hikes out of Mijas but well worth it (and helped work off some of the amazing Spanish cheese and meats we consumed on our trip)! We hiked on a clear day and we're able to see at the way to Morocco and Gibraltar from the top. Unfortunately, the end of the hike ends in a rather lame way of stopping at a radio control tower, but the view is amazing! For trail maps and other information regarding the trails, go to the Mijas tourist office. (I'm sure you can also find it online.)

Many spanish towns have a hill town a few miles inland. Frigliana is Nerja's, and is nice enough.
Mijas is Fuengirola's, and it is a cracker.

A couple of euros gets you there from Fuengirola's bus station. At once, you are rewarded by the fantastic view to the coast. The bus stops in the town centre, which is almost traffic-free, and off you go for a great day out.

This place is undoubtedly touristy, but has some upmarket shopping for leather and ceramics. Wander around for an hour, then have lunch. Watch the dancing in the square, see the patient donkey taxis - what's not to like ?

There are many ways to reach the highest part of the Sierra de Mijas. Some are shown on the free map available from Tourist Information office in Mijas although other routes are described in various guidebooks for walkers. The views from the summit are fantastic - Mijas, Benalmadena, Malaga and so many other places on the coast are visible. Don't attempt this walk unless you are fit, have water, sun screen and the confidence to be on your own in the mountains. This is just one of many well marked walks in the Sierra de Mijas - for me - the main reason I visit the region every year - high level challenging walks in the sun.

My husband and I like a good walk and thought we'd try the Picos de Mijas as the guide reviews were good and we had tried lots of the coastal walks. I would say at this point that we are 69 & 73 years old and have odd twinges in knees, hips etc.
We found the beginning of the "Red Walk" hard going but hoped it might get easier if we went a bit further, it was a very steep rocky climb to the first view point.
The views were magnificent however. The trail went around a bend at that point and we couldn't see what was ahead of us, we decided to carry on rather than go back... bit of a mistake really had we known what was ahead !
Wow ! talk about rocky, it was a shame that we couldn't take our eyes off ground level, but we had to watch where we were treading as there were loose rocks and gravel, with a steep drop over the edge of the path. We did however manage the whole red trail, and we didn't take much longer than the planned route suggested. We did ache the next day though and probably wouldn't suggest it was the best hike for older folk, and it's definitely not for anyone with a disability.... My husband had read that it was an "easy walk" (somewhere), we would not agree with this particular statement. We stopped for a well earned drink at a Mijas taverna after the walk, having made it back to our car safely. We saw some really spectacular scenery from the viewing points on the Red Trail. Can only sum-up this walk/hike as not one for the faint hearted.

A bus to Mijas from Fuengirola costs €1.55 each way and it is straight up the hill. 20 mins later you are at over 350m above sea level and the whole Costa Del Sol unravels before you. The hiking route are as 'serious' as the Lake District so you'll need sturdy shoes and occasional scrambling skills - this isn't a walk. I got up to 800m on the blue route and the views were incredible. Back in the village be sure to walk around the church on the paths provided. More great views and a surprising chasm with people climbing in it. Dozens of restaurants with a view. Very special place.

Visited July, the trails leading up the sierra de mijas are well marked, fairly easy for the person at least of average fitness levels. Views are breathtaking, be sure to pack plenty of water and a camera. Trail shoes would be ideal, rather than full on hiking boots . A distinctive smell of rosemary greets you near the higher slopes. I highly recommend a visit.

We love hiking in Spanish Costa del Sol. This was our 3rd mountain hike and the first we actually could reach the top. The 2 before we went close but had to abandon due to high wind on open mountain side (in Casares and in Nerja). We used gps points on Google map in phone to navigate our route. From Mijas it took us about 3,5 hours to reach the top. We carried 4,5 l water, fruits, peanuts and dark chokolate for energy. The path is partly very demanding and walking pole is necessary especially when downhill. From the top it was possible to see Africa with coast mountains, Gibraltar and the snow tops in Sierra Nevada. Really breath taking scenes.

Very atmospheric village set in the mountains with fabulous views down to the sea. It has an old religious shrine set in a cave, a very small bullring and lots of narrow streets. OK it's a bit commercialised now with horse & buggy rides, tourist shops & bars & restaurants galore. I've been there many times now & will probably go back again sometme.

Well-signposted (we only got confused once), spectacular views, and in April the wildflowers were glorious. Nothing too technical - we even ran one of the trails.

Maps (slightly out of date as they have added more trails) available from Tourist Information.
