About
Founded in 1756 by Royal Charter of King D. José I, Real Companhia Velha, also known as Royal Oporto Wine Company, has the most ancient Portuguese cellars in the countryThe centuries old cellars of Real Companhia Velha, are situated in Vila Nova de Gaia, right in front Oporto, in other words, on the left bank of Douro river.Over 100.000 m2 stores carefully a vast selection of Port Wines Tawny – aged in oak barrels -, as well as Vintage Port, maintaining the prestige e reputation this house enjoys over 250 years. At the cellars of Real Companhia Velha, in the silence of its vaults, the wine is kept in barrels of noble wood, the work made by coopers who have served the Company for many generations. There, asleep in a unique peacefulness, barrels and vats are lost in time... 10, 20... 30 years... What does it matter! The time it takes for each wine to reach its exact point of maturity. One of our Top Tours, starts with an exclusive video that shows the evolution of the Port since the Douro Region, all the way to the old cellars, followed to a visit to the main ageing cellar, centuries old, moving up to visit our old “Vintage” museum. Finishes with a tasting of two young Ports, white and red, plus a 20 year old tawny.

We booked a tour through Luxury Douro Tours and our first stop was Real Companhia Velha. It was a cold morning but we was ready to go. We was introduced to Fernando who took us through the vineyards and drove us up the winding mountain. He was a terrific guide, guiding us through the history of the landscape. He cut of fresh oranges, roses and herbs we even tried wild strawberries throughout the trip it was a treat for all the senses! If you are going to book a guided tour please ask for Fernando you will not regret.

We visited the Real Companhia Velha, and they had, of alle the 8 Port houses we visited, the best port wines offered on a regular tasting menu/flight.
As a visitor it is however really annoying that they choose to close for siesta for 2 hours, midday, which very few other port houses do, making it more difficult to find a suitable time for the visit, also seeing as they lie a bit of the beaten track compared to other port houses, and while they advise you to spend the siesta time in the local area, this is definitely not recommendable, absolutely nothing is going on in the area just around Real Companhia Velha. However once inside, it is a beautiful place, and the tasting room is stunning (could maybe do with a bit of background music for the ambience but all in all amazing room). The wines we were offered for the tasting were very very good and the value for money, outstanding on 2 of the 5 wines. Commercially it is a little strange as we wanted to buy quite a few cases of wone, but they do not ship and they also do not recommend any retailer, and if you do not have the possibility to shop directly in their physical shop, as it will not go in to your carry-on luggage, you are left to find their wines with someone, somewhere else yourself. Bot if you want to visit a beautiful port wine house, and taste some really amazing port at a reasonable cost, this is definitely a place to visit.

We had a great time on this visit! It started with a video presentation, followed by a tour around the cellars. This included the vintage cellars, which contain bottled wine dating from the 18th century. We were shown around by Bruna, who was very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and patient (with all our questions!).

We picked a combination of the Classic (€15) and Premium (€18) tours, which gave us a wider selection of wines to taste at the end of the tour (4 each). The Lágrima, Late Bottled Vintage and 20 year old Tawny were our favourites!

The tour takes place at the company’s main establishment at Rua Azevedo Magalhães, which is a little way away from the main riverside port wine cellars area. The buildings are beautifully kept, with very pleasant courtyards. The impression is that the crowds here aren’t as heavy as at some of the more popular cellars. The chance to talk, and savour the atmosphere and wines, was greatly appreciated!

We also were given a voucher to gain entry to the company’s “1756 Museu da 1a Demarcaçao” (by the river, on Av. Ramos Pinto, 44), which we visited later in the day. The museum gave an interesting insight into the setting up of the company, and of the DOC appellation. This visit also included a further tasting!

Highly recommended!

We travelled to Vila Nova de Gaia on a Grayline Porto Sightseeing coach tour (Note - very poor unreliable operator) and had hoped to visit the Quinta de Boeira lodge as a free tour and tasting was included in the price of the coach ticket. In the event we couldn't find it. It wasn't even mentioned on the Wine Tourism Guide we came across in the area.

However we were very fortunate in coming across the Real Companhia Velha Museum which had a free to enter Port Wine Day (10 September) to commemorate the 266th Anniversary of the company (founded in 1756) and 4th Anniversary of the Museum and attached restaurant (aptly called 17.56).

We spent a very interesting 30 - 40 minutes looking at the exhibits on display and finished with a tasting of a very nice Tawny Port. While on the premises we tried to have lunch in the 17.56 restaurant upstairs but unfortunately advance booking was required and they were fully booked so we had to go elsewhere. Before leaving the building however we went to the Museum shop where I bought two half bottles and a quarter sized bottle of different ports. All in all this proved to be an enjoyable experience.

We wanted an uncrowded, informative, and authentic port wine experience, and this historic cellar delivered. It's a short walk from the river, and includes a short informational video (images and music), and guides who split up the groups by language. The tour was about 30 minutes or so, and interesting, especially the web-covered historical bottles in the cellar. The tastings were good; if you can afford it, spring for the aged port, so mellow and good.

Impressive cellar. We had the founders tasting (approx duration 1,5h). But we were taken to the auditorium to follow the film of making port. Very general and not informative. After this we were to split to three groups according to the language.

Our guide told us all he had memorized like he would’ve read it from the book. Very unpersonized!

On the tasting area our guide quickly told us what is what and encourage to ask if anything… and then he left.

All this took an hour and and was befinetly NOT worth a money.

I reviewed the restaurant and the title came up as the wine company itself. The restaurant is up the hill in Vila Nova de Gaia only a short walk from the river side, but upstairs so the view is a lovely expanse of Porto. As I said in the review, the service is friendly and knowledgeable—ask the waiter what to order.

Beautiful facility. We were very much looking forward to the tour. We first watched a film on this brand’s quintas where they grow and harvest their grapes. Guide seemed knowledgeable but never made eye contact. The cellar was impressive. Once we were taken to the tasting area, it felt like we were being herded in. The guide quickly seated us in front of two glasses and promptly disappeared. My husband, the port drinker, was not impressed. Felt that both the white and red ports were average. I thanked her in English and in Spanish but was “corrected” to say “abrigada” which is thank you in Portuguese. There was no personal interaction seeking our feedback on the port unlike our experience at Pocas Junior yesterday which was very intimate and enjoyable.
