About
Taylor’s, accepted by most wine authorities to be the greatest of all port shippers, invites you to a pleasant and informative tour of its famous lodges at Vila Nova de Gaia. During the tour the visitor will be given the opportunity to learn about the fascinating history of Port wine, as well as that of the House of Taylor Fladgate making it one of the oldest Port companies. What wines will I taste? Two of Taylor’s iconic Port wines to taste: Chip Dry – Extra Dry White and Late Bottled Vintage (LBV), invented by Taylor’s in the 1930’s and 1970’s respectively, and a can of Chip Dry & Tonic - the delicious new Port and Tonic ready to drink.

Taylor's lived up to some very high expectations
Taylor's was kind of a bucket list place for us to visit, as we are huge Taylor's fans (both the vintages and tawnies). We had a privately guided tour and then the "connoisseur" tasting. The Taylor's grounds are lovely and have a great view from the top of the hill. We began with a visit by Bob, a rooster that loves to be petted. The tour took us through the caves and through the production process, and the guide was pretty well informed. The ports we got to taste included their chip dry white (that and tonic is a great summer drink), a couple of vintages, and various tawnies up to 50 years old. There was some great stuff in those bottles. We really enjoyed our time there. I would definitely go back for different of their tastings to get even a greater breadth of their wines.

    Grahams or Taylor’s for us
We did not do the tour but headed straight for the garden tasting area. The setting was beautiful and the waiter most polite and professional. My wife had a Taylor’s Chip Tonic which came with Olives for €6; it was very good value. I had a 2016 vintage. I initially thought that €17 a glass was overpriced, but as the weekend progressed I realised how good that port was. Definitely worth the experience. In retrospect I wish I had done the tour. We also visited Grahams; which had a lovely view from the terrace. That apparently is a slightly better tour….. but a longer walk to get there!

Beautiful old winery with a rich heritage and all the modern trimmings
From the moment you walk in their Port museum and caves you appreciate their rich heritage and quality. The tour can take 45 to 90 minutes depending on how you power through. For 20€ pp they could include a third or fourth glass of port to taste but I must admit it was worth the price of admission. Especially the barrel room and the garden for tasting afterwards. I was never a fan of port and likely won’t be for long given their high sugar content but at least for today, they made a fan out of me. I even ordered a fourth glass of LBV back at the hotel bar.

    A great experience
My partner is hugely interested in wine and port and has long been a fan of the Taylors brand. Admission costs €20 and it is a self guided tour that takes you through the port making process and includes 2 ports to sample at the end. The tour was educational and enjoyable and the staff member in the sampling room was a sweetheart, patiently explaining everything to us. Highly recommended. Taking off one star though because of the hill.

    Amazing 50 yr. old port
Skip the tour (Taylor's is a self-guided audio tour, Graham's in-person tour is outstanding!) and go straight for the tasting - splurge on the 40 and 50yr. old tasting, especially if you are already familiar with Taylor. My husband and I shared the tasting. The 40 yr. old was great but the 50 yr. old was AMAZING! So much depth and complexity. Their take on Pasteis de Nata has chocolate in it and it was yummy with the port. Staff was professional and knowledgeable.

    Lovely afternoon
We stumbled across here on a whim after wandering around looking for some sort of port tasting experience (with no plan in mind!). Recognised the Taylors name so went for it. 20euro for an audio tour where you wandered the storage casks with a handheld device that described what you were seeing in many different languages. Afterwards sat in a pretty courtyard where a waiter brought out two ports for us to try along with a can of port and tonic each to take home. Interesting and enjoyable, glad we picked here.

    Great visit
A very friendly-user visit for the discovery of port. We did Pinhao the day before and decided to visit Gaia because the grapes harvested in Douro were sent to the main port houses in Gaia. Very nice garden patio for the tasting. Great service by Nathalia at the gift shop.

    All very civilised
Not a port connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination, but it all felt so civilised sampling a fine selection of Taylor’s ports in its beautifully appointed courtyard complete with very obedient peacocks…proud springs to mind. While we didn’t have time to do the tour, it was good to be able to absorb the port experience. Nearby there is a very pretty vantage point with great views across the Douro River.

    Excellent Self Guided Audio Tour
A very in-depth self guided audio tour to go at your own pace. You will learn alot about Port history and Taylor's, very informative. Nice to be able to linger where you want and if you are with other people no one feels pressured to stay together. The tasting on the patio at the end of the tour was perfect in a nice relaxed setting. For Port fans it was a homerun!

One of the few Port lodges not to be missed
aylor’s history dates back to 1692. They are considered one of the top producers of Port Wine. Visitors take a detailed 60-minute audio tour while walking through their massive cellar and rooms displaying their history and processing. The tour ends with a tasting of two Ports with an option to purchase additional exceptional wine at a reasonable price. While there, I recommend lunch at their Barao Fladgate Restaurant for the exquisite food and a perfect view of Porto.
Dear Tab, Thank you for your visit to Taylor's and for your time in sharing your experience. We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your tour of the cellars, and that you found it informative and interesting. We are also glad that you followed the visit with a great meal at Barão Fladgate! We hope welcoming you again soon!

Waitress cheated on the change.
Taste and atmosphere were excellent.
But when we paid in cash, the blonde waitress gave change 5 Euro less than it should be.
Be careful when you pay in cash. If the waitress brings the change, it is recommended to check the amount immediately. Otherwise it is difficult to prove that the waitress cheated. Do not let the waiters leave the table before you check. The change is brought in a wooden box and difficult to check immediately.

The Tour with the personal audio handset was perfect giving the complete history and production methods from the very early days to the present.
All the barrels and exhibits were exactly as one would hope for.
The tasting in the Rose Garden on a perfect summers day could not have been better. The extra nibbles of cheese, olives, meats, biscuits and bread were of the highest quality. So much so we order more cheese and biscuits.

Excellent wine customer service rather poor. I bought two bottles of vintage wine that were not cheap. When I asked the girl about the fronts to the boxes she said that they did not come with them. When we got back to the hotel everyone but me had the fronts, including others that bought the same as me.

We really enjoyed our private tour at Taylor’s. Joanna our guide was charming and informative and was able to answer all our questions about our favourite drink! We choose to add on a guided tasting of 4 vintage ports at the end and we’re really pleased that we did.
I did have a considerable amount of trouble booking this tour with Taylor’s but I am so glad I persisted! We finished with much at the Barao Fladgate restaurant. A perfect end to the tour .

This is one of the more touristy places that we visited, but it was an excellent opener to the world of ports and tawnies in Gaia. Their patio for tastings afterward is beautiful and even included a free tonic for home. There are peacocks openly in the garden, which made for an excellent first night in Portugal as an excited tourist, ready to take on Porto!

Acknowledged by at least 3 members of staff when we arrived - yet sat there for 10mins without anyone approaching us with a menu etc, deff so put not being busy. Got up and left; went to Queveda instead; lovely staff and great port. Won’t be spending any money with Taylor’s now or in the future - expected do much more

Very disappointing visit and tasting. Had the basic visit and it was an audioguide, not a real human guide.

Caves are ok but other are much better in Gaia.

Included port was a white and a red port. Red was not even a tawny. Only 2 ports and cannot choose what we want.

Very overprice for what we got.

Only positive is the garden outside that is really lovely.

Sorry Taylor’s: you were our favorite tawny brand (love your 10 years tawny) but after this visit, we are over with your products.

We felt like your cave was a cash machine without soul.

Fair old climb up from the quayside. €20 for audio guide and tasting. The tour was OK, the handheld device worked but would occasionally need resetting. The commentary was a bit dull and went into an incredible amount of detail that may be appreciated by a port aficionado, but was too much for a beginner. That said, the casks and the production process are pretty impressive. Best part was the tasting in the lovely gardens of two samples.

This was a really good tour, full of information, really interesting walk through the cellars, seeing the casks and other equipment, loads of info on the whole port- making process, on the Douro valley, the history of wine making in Portugal,
the vineyards, videos and interactive bits, the audio guide was really informative. The tasting at the end was great. All in all, a great experience!
