We visit the reserve regularly when we are in Porto/Gaia. Depending on the season the variety of wildlife to be seen also varies. The hide is well out into the estuary.

We took a cab to the Douro Marina and then went along the walking path to the Reserva. We did this on a sunny day (60's F) with no wind. They have a bicycle path, too. Cranes, seagulls and ducks. Then walked slightly uphill to lookout over Atlantic Ocean. Park areas with benches along the way. Nice nature break from the city.

Apparently we were unlucky as we saw hardly birds. There is a nice walkway to a viewing hut but all explanations are in Portuguese. Would only visit again if you see birds from the distance.

A large sandbank at the mouth of the river with lots of birds. Just go further to reach the coast, the beach and a great vantage point.

Had a walk along to this nature reserve with my wife after having visited the Douro Marina. The nature reserve is situated near to the mouth of the Douro River. Roaming freely in the area is not permitted, but there are two boardwalks which can be walked along, and which lead to two bird hides. Posters are displayed showing the types of birds that can be spotted and the best times of years for seeing the different species.
The main office is at the entrance. Admission is free. A definite must see for bird spotters. The area is very tranquil, offers peace with nature, and lovely views.
