A beach with golden sand on Madeira
Tuesday 12 September and we walked along the seafront Promenade in Machico. This is one of the few sandy beaches on Madeira with the golden sand imported from North Africa. It is enclosed by Ribeira da Machico estuary and the Bridge at one end and the Harbour and it's wall and Cais de Machico (Fort) at the other. There are static umbrellas along the beach for rent. There is plenty of space along the beach for visitors to spread out their towels and beach mats on the sand. Of the two beaches in Machico this one is the largest but also the most popular due to it's appearance, the sand makes it more appealing. The other Beach comprises of stones and pebbles. Along the promenade there are a number of places to purchase food, snacks and drinks. From the it's vantage point on the clifftop, there is a wonderful view along the harbour, the Bridge and the two Beaches.

    Fantastic beach!
We went twice during our trip to madeira. It was clean, had toilets and changing rooms. Plenty of the restaurants around it. Water was warm, sand soft and we had a lot of fun chasing little fishes. The only issue was to find a spot for our car.

Great beach, very clean and has facilities.
We chose to stay a few nights in Machico purely so we had easy access to a sandy beach for our beach loving children and it didn't disappoint. The sea was a nice temperature, the access to the water was shallow and remained shallow for a good distance. The beach itself was lovely and clean and there were toilets on the beach. In fact Machico itself had a really good amount of public toilets - when you have young children this is important! We will definitely return.

Go for the views and forget the beach.
A very small stretch of sandy beach and busy since Madeira has no natural sandy beaches. Separated by a river, the next beach is a natural and pebbly one. However, there is a promenade that links the dilapidated fort to the pretty chapel and lighthouse at the end. Great views of Sao Lourenco and Deserta islands.

Teribile experience. Had the missfortune to stay during gastronomic week festival near the beach. The beach was crowdy, no place to eat because it was full of people, smell from a terrace near our place. Also the people who clean the streets used very loud leafblowers all over the promenade every morning from 7’o Clock and woke us up every morning .

Tuesday 22nd June we were sightseeing and exploring in Machico which included a visit to the Beach. It is one of a handful of beaches in Maderia that has sand, it is imported sand.

The beach is flanked on either side by the  Port area on one side and Ribeira da Machico on the other.

It is also one of the two beaches in Machico,  the other is Praia Sao Roque. Although they are neighbours they are separated by the river and can be accessed by crossing over Machico Bridge.

Both beaches are situated in  the picturesque Machico Bay enclosed by cliffs and rocky headland on both sides.

A lovely stretch of golden sand which is protected by rocky groynes.

A lifeguard/rescue centre is located on the beach. Apart from a few static umbrellas and a handful of sunbeds there was nothing else on the beach.

It is a very nice walk along the promenade that is at the top of the beach from the Port to Machico Bridge

When we visited it was very soon after some COVID restrictions had been lifted and tourists were thin on the ground. In normal times can image this beach full of tourists and a good place to visit.

This is very good beach to chill and relax. Golden sand and place for everyone. There is a seafood restaurant with not bad dishes. Also there is WC and changing cabins. But changing cabins closed due to COVID.

Having parked by the beach for the third year, this year we actually plucked up courage to swim. Although the initial plunge was into a apparently cold sea, we soon acclimatised and had a really pleasant swim, with it being fairly sheltered.
There are loos by the front which helped with changing.

Small white sandy beach, well protected by the safeguards of the port of Mochico. Well served by nearby diners (we eat some good churros). Good place to take some photos.

What is the sense of taking sand from Marocco to Madeira? Madeira is a volcanic island for 230 million years and this it what it should be. There is the black sand. If you need white sand, go to Marocco.

The beach is best feature of a visit to Machico. Anyone looking to sunbathe with sand beneath you feet this is the place to go on Madeira.

Apart from the beach there are a small number of bars and restaurants. The bay is not particularly picturesque, nor is the town.

If travelling from Funchal it is SAM buses that operate the route, bus station in Funchal is opposite Dolce Vita shopping mall. The express bus takes about 25 minutes whereas the ordinary service takes twice as long.
