Beautiful and elegant square, the focal point of the town, the large chessboard on the ground is used for a re-enactment with living chess. In winter, an ice rink is also prepared for skating. The buildings are beautiful, the whole area is worth seeing calmly.

Wonderful and particular square with its chessboard used in September with living pieces. On one side there is the lower castle and on the other at the top the upper castle with walls that descend towards the square. A real gem.

Wow!!!!!!!!! This is the little town of Marostica, in Veneto, in the Vicenza zone. It's named the town of chess, the production of cherry is very important.

We had a five day hol based in Abano Terme with the highlight being a concert with Andrea Bocelli in Marostica. What an amazing evening, moon rising over the battlements of Piazza Castello and the opera ..... we both cried !!

Definitely worth the visit. Go to La Madonina for lunch. Everything is home made. It's a small family run place where they take pride in their work.

What more can I say - this place is beautiful and has such historical significance. My students found it like a playground and couldn't help but pretend to be chess pieces. It's large, surrounded by places to eat and there are toilets nearby.
The concerts that are performed here are apparently stunning. Put this place on your hit list.

Truly a wonderful way to take in the history of Italy without being overwhelmed by tourists. Marostica and piazza Castello offers a relaxing atmosphere with small family shops selling antiques, Italian clothing and cherry flavored Grappa. They also hold an antique market in the piazza at the beginning of each month.
if you are adventurous and in good shape you can walk up the hill to the main castle and have a very good meal.

Marostica is a beautiful town and the piazza is the heart of it. With regular entertainment visiting the square, a weekly market, and delightful shops around it, Piazza Castello is a recommended experience.

What is the nearest airport to Marostica and how to get from the airport to Marostica?
Written 16 September 2021
Venice, or Verona. From Marostica a short cab/bus to Bassano and then regular trains to Venice. Alternatively travel to Vicenza then on to Verona by train and there is an aiport there also.

Hi ! I plan on going to see il Volo in this piazza next week. Can you recommend seating? I'd rather not pay the highest price if there are decent seats for less.
thanks

Hi, i was not there for a concert so would not be able to give an answer, but I would think sitting at the back would be good as the church is there and would enhance the acoustics, but just a hunch.

Can you tell me more about the chess game? Is it people playing chess or like a game. Also why are there walls in the piazza
Written 26 July 2016
Marostica has been a walled city since medieval times.

Is the chess game people playing chess or like a show?
Written 26 July 2016
Both!!
The festival takes places this September for several days with a chess match played with human chess pieces in customs. The piazza is a large marble chess chess board, and the human chess pieces are moved around to win the hand of the lords daughter.
You can check out the website and purchase tickets in english if you google marostica chess.
