The square is located off the main road area I need to put be easy to missed. We came here as a part of a tour group to attend the Expo Chianti Classico wine festival. It turned out to be the most inefficiently organized event I have ever seen. One could only access the Square from certain streets that were blocked, and very slow organizers were checking temperatures and tickets. That would’ve been fine if than one could approach the kiosks of the wine merchants and obtain samples. but NO! First there was a huge line to obtain a plastic glass and 6 wine coupons from one (1) counter. After that one would approach a tiny fenced off area in the middle of the square and wait to be let in. We got in to this little tiny fenced off area after a 40 minute wait, and then had to line up again, maybe 20 people to a line, at least eight lines, and wait to get to a counter to be served a tiny portion of wine to taste. Let me save you about two hours of waiting. Go to any of the restaurants that are lining the periphery of the Square and enjoy wine tasting immediately, while comfortably sitting down at an outdoor table. We discovered too late, that even though the Expo Classico is only in the fenced off area, one can enjoy wine tastings everywhere.

The annual Greve Wine Festival held on the piazza is held in early September and features over 40 booths of local vineyards selling their wares. You can buy a tasting pass for 10 Euro that gives you 7 tastings of your choice among the booths (minimum of 7 because some representatives don't bother to punch your card). We met many wonderful representatives there who made it possible for direct purchasing from the vineyard (including shipping) without a distributor. Several of the reps we talked to advised us that most of their harvest is consumed in Europe and China, with distributors on the US East Coast getting very little in comparison. As a result, us Midwesterners have very little chance.
We ordered some bottles of different vintages and Chianti products and split cases with couples who were with us. It was a great afternoon of regional wine education, tasting and commerce.
If you're heading to heading to Tuscany region in early September, be sure to put Greve and the festival as a priority on your list of "must do's"

Visited during Greve-in-Chianti wine festival. Numerous small shops with locally made goods & products. Lots of flowers, with church at far end of piazza. Loverly way to spend an hour or two.

Chianti region is nice for driving in narrow roads with beatiful view but the town Greve in Chianti has nothing special. This square is similar to the other many squares in Italy. If you have limited time in Toscana region, do not waste time in this little town and see other interesting places.

This is the center of Greve in Chianti, Italy. On Saturday mornings there is a large open air market where fruits and vegetables, meats and cheeses and all kinds of consumer goods are sold. Everyone in town must be there. The triangular shaped square is the hub of the city and it is ringed with shops and restaurants and the church is at the very top.

We were very lucky and stumbled upon the annual wine festival! But, even without, it seems like a wonderful place to spend an afternoon browsing nice shops and restaurants. Beautiful town.

Wife and I took a wine tour that had a brief stop in Greve. We grabbed a quick coffee then just strolled around town. This piazza is so picturesque with the church at the top end. It's not crawling with tourists and the town and surround area are beautiful. I recommend leisurely strolling around the square and just taking it in

My wife and I were recently in Greve for a week and stayed within easy walking distance of the piazza. I had done research before our trip and thought I had an idea of what to expect but nothing prepared me for the depth of the experience.
It is an open and pedestrian-friendly place despite the presence of parking. A statue of the explorer Verrazzano [ an historical figure that might be more recognizable to people that are familiar with metropolitan New York City] guards the piazza and it is flanked by excellent restaurants, a wonderful little bakery , one of the best known butchers in Italy , a tourist information building and numerous shops. The famous black rooster emblem of Chianti Classico is prominently displayed on one of the buildings.
We got to the piazza every day of our visit. There is a market on Saturday and we saw a craft-type show under tents on Sunday. We ate there in the evening and enjoyed sitting on the terrace of our ristorante watching people pass by in an unhurried fashion and strolled by and in the shops during the day. The bakery is a real gem and was crowded with townspeople in the know. We passed through a number of small towns while visiting places in Chianti and none of them seemed to have a piazza that even came close to Greve's
