Worth a visit if you are in Luca or Pisa. The Certosa is decorated with magnificent Baroque and rococo paintings. In COVID, reservations are required, so call ahead. Even pre-COVID, you have to tour it with a group. Full of atmosphere, and stunning decorations. The same site also houses the natural history museum, and an aquarium, which are apparently worth the visit.

Incredible and impressive monument a few kilometers from Pisa.
We were lucky enough to get a guided tour for ourselves in Italian (my wife speaks it perfectly) although they give you a brochure in Spanish.
In the same monumental complex you can visit the magnificent Museum of Natural History of the University of Pisa. The entrance is separate.
The visit to the monastery lasts about two hours. The monument has areas under restoration, so we were not able to see one of its best rooms, the pharmacy.
We will have to return.

The Calci Charterhouse is a beautiful monument. well cared for despite its truly remarkable size and which we were lucky enough to visit with just two of us, accompanied by a young, knowledgeable and passionate guide.
This monument certainly deserves a visit, and so does the Natural History Museum which is set up in a part of its structure by the University of Pisa.
We really hope that many will go and see it because it deserves to be visited and supported.

We were very surprised that this extraordinary Carthusian monastery is so unknown. The complex is very large and artistically designed. You get a wonderful guided tour, in English if you want. This is a hidden treasure!
And afterwards it is well worth visiting the Natural History Museum in the same building. A phenomenal collection of scientific exhibits. Great!

We went on a 1 hour tour of the place. The place is beautiful but we weren't able to get the tour in English even though the guide was able to speak English. We were handed a piece of paper in English but it wasn't sufficient in order to understand the history of the place or even know which rooms we were in during the tour. We thought that maybe it was because there wasn't time to explain in both languages but the tour ended 10 minutes early. We therefore felt a bit neglected for being foreign tourists which was a shame.

Just a 20min bus ride from Pisa is this wonderful monastery, surrounded by the most beautiful Tuscan countryside. The place is beautiful but not well advertised in my opinion. Inside this monastery there is a peaceful atmosphere and lots of nice frescoes and artwork to appreciate. We had a guided tour of the place and there were so few people! At first we thought we made a wrong decision to go there because the bus was empty and so was the road leading to the place, but inside this place are some nice works which really should not be missed! The entrance ticket is 5euro with a reduction for students and free for seniors (if not mistaken). In my opinion, the local council of the place should do more to make this place better known because it feels like it's a bit of a neglected jewel. Pisa and surroundings is definately more than Piazza dei Miracoli!

It was by pure chance we visited the museum, only because we decided to stay in Calci in order to not stay overnight in Pisa. We noticed the grand front to the monestry at the top of the hill only 1000 meters from our lovely b&b. We were the only visitors and enjoyed a personal tour by a guide who could not speak English. This didn't affect the tour and we all mucked along to communicate the best we could. The monestry is one of the most stunning examples with its incredible 1300s cathedral. We were awesome struck with its beauty. History and culture. Highly recommended!

We really enjoyed an hour long guided tour of the Certosa Monastery. Although it may look a little neglected from the outside, it contains some of the most beautifully painted interiors and amazing frescos, especially the ones in the refectory. Easy to get to from Pisa, about 20 minutes drive from the airport, and with the Natural History Museum next door, it is worth a visit.

In October 2019 we visited the Certosa di Calci for the second time and were even more struck by its architectural beauty and exuberant decor. The church had been restored, following a roof leak a few years back, and the colours of the frescos were more vivid than ever. We had a 90-minute guided tour from an enthusiastic lady who knew her history well and spiced it with interesting anecdotes. She explained how the 3D floor tiles are unique one-offs, how Napoleon stripped the monastery of its best pieces and took them off to France. How no women were allowed in the monastery whatsoever, unless they were royalty. We particularly enjoyed visiting the pharmacy, which was an important repository of knowledge about medicine - and source of herbal medicines - in the Renaissance period. And the monks' living quarters, with their fireplace that was lit only half an hour per evening in winter, and their private courtyard gardens, with apple and orange trees. Allow three hours if you would like to combine visiting the monastery with the Natural History Museum next door.

You can see this amazing building from almost everywhere around Calci. Unfortunately you can't see the building without paying to go into the museum, but it's worth it.

The museum is a strange mixture of the very traditional and the very modern. There are minerals, fossils, stuffed animals, live fish, dinosaurs and an amazing collection of whale skeletons. A very interesting part is a recreation of the collections and study of the original 19th century collectors, and this is very well presented. In the (recently modernised) area on dinosaurs you'll find video screens and touch screens, and presented in beautiful old buildings.

Some people might not appreciate the large collection of stuffed mammals (all the collection of a single hunter...) but it's strangely impressive, and they do at least appear to be well made and hence reasonably realistic. And the collection of whales is both informative and excellently presented in a beautifully modernised wing of the building.

Certainly worth a visit.
