This area is a fun spot to eat, watch people strolling and, not to be missed...investigating all the stores in the alleys behind the front area of the marina (so many good things to be discovered in those alleys!)

We were staying on Agia Anna beach, but we dropped our rental car the afternoon before we departed and spent it in the harbor area. This is a busy small boat marina surrounded by shops and cafes.

We were glad we experienced it.

If you are going to Naxos with your own boat or with a boat you chartered then do not bother.
They are very unfriendly to the boaters. Everyone tries to skim you.
We dropped anchor and backed into the harbour wave-breaker. Whom we thought was a helpful guy caught our line and tied it. But then when we were all done, docked and settled, the guy stood around and would not leave. We figured he was expecting money, so we tipped him.
Then about in an hour someone showed up asking for our boat registration and for money. We asked what were the services we were going to get in return, water? Shorepower? We got nothing. After seesawing for 10 minutes we paid him since he “threatened” us with calling in the port police. We thought €26 euros he was asking for was not worth ruining our vacation so we paid him. He did give us an invoice though that look official. He said the money would go to the municipality.
In about another hour another guy showed up. Asking for money. With his extremely limited English he kept saying “rope money”, waving some paperwork into our face. We told him to go way. He came back in 10 minutes along with a lady who spoke some English. She told us that the guy who tied our line belong to the “harbour workers union” and since we had him tie our line we employed his services and we had to pay €30 euros. That is about $35 USD. $35 for less then 2 minutes of work makes about $1000 an hour. That is more than a good big city lawyer makes in the US! This guy stood there and offered to help us. Otherwise we were quite capable if tying our own line!!
It was not the amount of money being asked but it was the feeling of being prayed upon that made us want to leave Naxos right away but it was already dark so we had to stay but decided not to set foot on this island. The Greek dinner we had been dreaming of all day had to wait until tomorrow when we got back in Paros.
I resent having to write this review with all this negativity during my vacation but I am very upset and very disappointed. I needed to let it out, and wanted everyone to know. Take my word, avoid Naxos. Greek Cyclades is not short of islands. Naxos was the 8th island we had stopped by and the only one who saw and treated tourist as chicken to be plucked. Go to Paros, Amargos, Ios, Sikinos …
Oh! By the way, the harbour sucked, not safe with big swells especially when the ferries come and go. One of us had to stay on watch throughout the night. In the morning at 6 the anchor was up and we could not wait to leave Naxos behind and erase it from our memory of otherwise being a great time in the Cyclades.

walking the marina and stop into all the local shops and don't forget to eat. And of course, finish off the evening with some gelato!

Absolutely chaotic place. Had boats to wait outside for a whole day, and then let them in at late afternoon, what a lousy level of service. Avoid this. Harbour master, was just a simple guy with a small kiosk. No toilets, no showers, overfilled rubbish station is used by local fishermen too. Upon arrival there where a handful of locals on their private yachts actively defending their right to have at least 10 feet of empty space between their boats on prime moorings. There is nothing for a sailor, town though nice. But harbour for guestboats.... No. Forget it.
