I was moved and inspired by my visit to the Newsome House Museum and Cultural Center. We were courteously greeted and welcomed in for a tour. Not only did we learn some interesting history about J Thomas Newsome who was an impressive individual who came from very humble beginnings, (his parents were former slaves) but there was also an exhibit... Very interesting history of this museum. Parking in the back. Make sure that you go 10 blocks away to the waterfront. Beautiful view and nice houses.

I enjoyed stopping by the Newsome House, though i didn't get to go inside, the information about Mr. Newsome and how he has achieved so much is enough to want to learn more about him.

I beautiful house. Steeped in history. Wonderful for a venue for a bridal shower, small wedding, or baby shower. The décor is full of antiques. The staff is very pleasant.

I took my kids here for a African American history mini lesson. There is no charge, but a $2 per person donation is suggested. The tour is worth it...the house isn't that big, but our tour guide was very knowledgeable not just about Mr. Newsome and his family, but about the rich history in the Newport News area of Virginia.... YOU would be missing a wealth of regional history. It was founded after a prominent AA attorney. It has been TOTALLY restored while keeping true to the "period" of the original structure, if that makes sense. The house is nestled deep in the SE section of the city. There is a small section of off street parking. The curator, will... More

This is one of the little known hidden secrets in Newport News, VA. The Victorian style house was the home of Joseph Thomas Newsome, the son of former slaves and one of the first African Americans to practice law before the Supreme Court of VA after the Civil War. The permanent exhibit not only tells Newsome's story, but the history... More

My tour guide was so friendly and did a great job highlighting the points of history and also giving me time to explore on my own. A unique site and story. An important piece of African-American history.

Newsome house is well-worth a visit for any history lover, regardless of race. There isn't a ton to see, and you can see and read it all in under an hour, but given the dearth of sites showcasing prominent African Americans of this era (as well as the nominal $2.00 admission fee) definitely worth the time. And the history is... More
